02 February, 2012 Following encouraging customer response for its compact SUV ‘RiO’ at the last month’s 11th Auto Expo and new dealership applications, Premier Ltd is ramping up its after sale service network all over India.
The Pune-based automobile manufacturer will set up ‘Premier authorised service stations’ under the brand ‘PASS’. It plans to have 200 such centres for RiO nationwide by June. A dedicated team has been formed to implement this initiative in a time-bound manner, a company release said here today.
The company is also adding another 30 dealers to its existing network of 50, taking its overall network to 80 dealerships by June. Premier is targeting 100 dealerships and 300 service stations by December 2012 for easy service and repair in all major markets, it said.
Premier plans to offer RiO spare parts at reasonable prices.
“We look at spare parts purely as customer service and not as a profit centre. Consequently, our spare parts cost much less than comparable vehicles. RiO customers will not face any problem with sales, parts or service,” Premier VP (Automotive) Rakesh Mehta said.
Premier has a tie-up with ‘India Assistance’ to provide 24x7 breakdown service, the release said.

09 November, 2011 Rising land prices in and around Ahmedabad have forced three-wheeler manufacturer Atul Auto Limited to cancel its proposed Rs 150-crore expansion plan. The listed company will now look for a 100 acre plot elsewhere in the state or even outside it.
“Arrival of Tata Motors, Ford and Peugeot at Sanand resulted in sky-rocketing of land prices in the vicinity of Ahmedabad. After Maruti’s announcement, land owners and dealers feel they can fetch higher prices and are consequently backing out on previous deals. The private owner of the land with whom we were negotiating raised the price exorbitantly at the eleventh hour, forcing us to scout for new location,” said Vijay Kedia, CMD of Rajkot-based Atul Auto Limited.
The company plans to increase the light commercial vehicles as well as enter the four-wheeler segment. The proposed plant was to have a capacity to produce 30,000 units annually. The diversification from three-wheelers to two-wheelers is part of growth strategy of the company and as hedge against downturn in any particular segment.
The company feels that the new location can affect its business plans. “But we don’t have a choice,” said Kedia.
Atul Auto will also raise capacity at its existing site in Gujarat with an investment of Rs 60 crore and is looking for technical collaboration for the expansion. It plans to double the capacity of three-wheelers from 24,000 units to 48,000 and then to 54,000 by 2013-14. New models are being lined up for launch in the January-March 2012 quarter. Some of these will be launched with better fuel efficiency figures than its current lot of products. The work on technology to improve fuel efficiency is in progress at its R&D centre at Pune.
In order to decrease the pressure on its facilities in India, Atul Auto plans to set up assembly lines in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. At 12,000 units annually, it expects a business of Rs 150 crore from its Bangladesh operations. It had stopped exports last year to meet growing demand from its domestic dealers. Unlike Bangladesh, where it has a technology alliance with its partner who has invested in the assembly infrastructure, the company plans to adapt a joint venture model in Sri Lanka. Talks are at an advanced stage with the Sri Lankan partner and a final decision is likely to be taken in few months.

Tata Motor recently has funded research projects and working toward on the use of hydrogen from water as an alternative fuel to drive cars.

The research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will definitely put India on the global map for an eco friendly move.

Speaking on the launch, noted scientist C N R Rao said, “Tata has given $15 million to fund the research being conducted by MIT professor Daniel Nocera on using water as auto fuel. The project involves generating hydrogen by splitting water and storing it in a safe can to drive an automobile.”

He added, “As it is Tata’s dream to run his cars on water ultimately, he is funding the project so that he will have control on the innovative technology. He will also be associated with the start-up to develop the prototype, which will have a catalyst to warm up the water and create hydrogen as a fuel.”

Tata and Nocera, own the patent and plan to set up a start-up building a prototype that can store hydrogen in a compressed form. The compressed hydrogen is then fit into the car for using as an alternative fuel which is not only eco friendly but also cost effective.

If there is one international automobile brand whose presence in India has yet to leave a mark on the Indian psyche that has to be Volvo. The company that claims to make the safest cars in the world was always known for its commercial vehicles rather than cars.

The Swedish major has almost all the range of products – right from sedans to SUVs – but none have set the sales charts on fire like the German counterparts.

Volvo XC60 Volvo XC60 crossover

All that may be about to change as Volvo plans an entry-level SUV to hit showrooms by 2013. Called the XC30, it will be 280mm shorter than the big brother – XC60.

The new baby is aimed to take the German rivals X1, Q3 and GLC head on. What makes the proposition more interesting is the fact that BMW has garnered immense success with their X1 in India.

So clearly the XC30 is destined for India. But to take the X1 head on Volvo needs the SUV to be cost competitive as is the big brother XC60 in its class. So will Volvo develop 2 models – one for the European and American market and one for the BRIC nations?

Bajaj Auto is planning a massive dealership attack. The company is looking to tap into the growing bike mart in India full-on. For this Bajaj Auto is looking to set-up 130 new dealerships along with state of the art upgrades to 1100 service centers. The company plans to do this by next festive season and it said that an investment of Rs 18 crore is required to just upgrade the 1100 service centers.

Bajaj Auto said it plans massive distribution network expansion to meet robust growth targets, adding 130 new dealerships and upgrading 1,100 service centres by next festive season.

The new dealers, largely in small towns, would take the total number to more than 600 dealerships across India, the company said.

According to S Sridhar, President – Motorcycle Business, Bajaj Auto, the company is well placed in terms of distribution as far as Pulsar – a premium brand, with an urban focus – is concerned.

“On the other hand ‘Discover’ which is a mass commuter has huge potential in smaller towns. While Discover’s growth in terms of volumes and market share has been outstanding, the next big boost will come from increasing the share in these towns and in rural India which accounts for more than 50 per cent sales of this category”, he said.

“These new dealerships will help the company to increase the share in this model in smaller towns which are today inadequately catered to by only the secondary network,” Sridhar said.
