Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) has revealed plans to make India an export hub for its small cars, primarily for European and African markets. However, the company also added that it is imperative for the country to develop its infrastructure for further growth and expansion.
At the Nikkei Business Summit, Osamu Suzuki, Chairman, SMC, said, “For Europe, Africa and West Asia (Middle East), we are looking at India as an export hub, as we want to use India as an export hub, ports are very important. We would like to request the government to improve them (ports).”
SMC’s Indian subsidiary Maruti Suzuki counts 1.47 lakh units as the number of exports from the country in 2009-10.
Surrounding a speculated deal involving SMC’s and German auto giant Volkswagen, Suzuki said, “Suzuki Japan and Volkswagen Germany are in talks. Maruti Suzuki has nothing to do with those talks.”
Volkswagen acquired 19.9 % stake in SMC for USD 2.5 billion (around INR 11,450 crore) in 2009. The two automakers have been discussing a possible joint production, engine development and small car project for India. Details are yet to be known.
