29 December, 2011 The Indian automotive industry is set to hike prices by 2-10 per cent in the first quarter of the next financial year following rise in input costs and fall in rupee, a study by industry body Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India said on Wednesday.
Assocham interacted with 50 auto experts including former chairmen of various leading automobile manufacturers, dealers, auto parts traders and analysts. The survey was conducted in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.
Rising interest rates, steep increase in input costs, unregulated price hike of raw material, sudden depreciation of rupee and labor pangs have affected the industry, said DS Rawat, secretary general of Assocham that released the report 'Indian Auto Industry: The Year Ahead'. Respondents opined that the industry is likely to reel under costs pressure unless the situation improves globally. More than 50% of those who took part in the survey said, profit margins of the industry might shrink further amid negative consumer sentiments due to soaring fuel prices and inflation.
Ten respondents were optimistic of the automobile industry growth on the back of sound fundamentals of Indian economy and hoped for improved industrial growth in the months to come. Those interviewed expressed shock over the sudden decline in India's industrial production.

13 April, 2011 Car maker Nissan Motor India said it has hiked prices of its small car Micra by up to Rs 11,170 with immediate effect to offset the pressure of rising input costs.
“The hike will be applicable to both petrol and diesel versions and will be in the range of Rs 2,500 (0.5 per cent) to Rs 11,170 (2 per cent),” the company said in a statement.
The existing ex-showroom, Delhi, prices of the petrol version of Micra varies between Rs 4.06 lakh and Rs 4.36 lakh, while the diesel car is available for Rs 5.59 lakh-Rs 6.05 lakh.
The company, however, did not raise the prices of its imported models such as sports utility vehicle X-Trail, luxury sedan Teana and sports car 370Z, it added.
Commenting on the development, Nissan Motor India Managing Director and CEO Kiminobu Tokuyama said: “There has been a steady increase in the input cost over a period of time. It has come to a situation now that the price hike is inevitable and we have decided to increase the price of Micra.”
In this month, many auto makers have raised the prices of their products on account of rising commodity rates. The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India increased prices of its vehicles across all models between Rs 1,100 to Rs 9,000 for similar reasons.
Homegrown auto major Mahindra and Mahindra raised prices of its entire range of vehicles by up to Rs 15,000. Tata Motors has also hiked prices of its passenger vehicles by up to Rs 36,000 from April 1.
Another big car maker Hyundai Motor India is also mulling taking a similar step.

14 December, 2010 Nissan India Motor is planning to assemble its luxury sedan Teana in India in semi knocked-down condition by the end of February. This will help the company to price the competitively in the Indian market. Currently, consumers pay 110% duty on cars imported as completely built units (CBU).
“We have looked up all the option to increase volume. We are studying semi knocked-down (SKD) option for Teana,” said Kiminobu Tokuyama CEO and MD Nissan India. The SKD operation will start by the middle of next year. The car will be assembled at its Orgadan plant of Nissan-Renault in Chennai.
The Nissan manufacturing unit has an annual capacity of 2,00,000 units but it is utilising only 70,000 units for manufacturing Micra. At present, Nissan imports Teana, X trail small utility vehicle and its sports car 370Z in completely built unit from Japan.
Currently Nissan pays more than 100% duty which includes taxes such as countervailing tax, education and automobile cess. In comparison, the completely knocked-down unit (CKD) and semi knocked down unit attract basic custom duty of just 10% and even after addition of various duties it goes up to 25%.
“Import taxes on complete built vehicles are very high and make the car expensive. This has limited the growth of Teana,” said Tokuyama.
Since its launch in 2007, Nissan sold 764 units of Teana in India. The Japanese car maker plans to launch nine new vehicles in India by 2012. Of these, five models will be produced in India and four models will be imported from Japan.

08 December, 2010 Increasing input costs have forced carmakers to increase prices from January 1, which will enhance the sales in December. Hyundai and General Motors have already announced price hikes. And others such, Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota Kirloskar Motors, and Ford are all set to follow suit.
“We are forced to go for the increase in the range of 1.5-2 % as major inputs like steel, rubber and other metals have shown an upsurge in the past few months,” Hyundai Motor India spokesman said.
General Motors India will increase its car prices by 3%. While natural rubber prices have doubled in recent months, copper prices have soared by nearly 15% in the past few months.
“We have been absorbing rising input costs by enhancing our operational efficiencies. But now we have to pass them on to consumers,” said Mayank Pareek, executive officer (marketing & sales), Maruti.
Tata Motors is also likely to increase the prices in the range of 2-3 % for its passenger vehicles. However, the company does not intend to increase the price of its new launches Nano and Aria, two people familiar with the matter said. “There is indeed an upward pressure on input costs. However, as on date, we cannot provide you with specific guidance on a price increase,” said Tata Motors spokesperson.
The sharp appreciation in the value of the Japanese yen against the US dollar has forced Japanese carmakers like Toyota and Honda to revise their car prices in the Indian market.

Maruti Suzuki India reported last week that it will increase prices of its vehicles soon due to input cost and impact of strengthening yen. The company is currently planning on by how much and when it could hike the prices of its vehicles.

“In the past few months the input costs have increased significantly. We have been absorbing so far through internal efficiency measure but now we have to pass it on to the consumers,” Maruti Suzuki India Managing Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Mayank Pareek said.

He said, “The Company has to take the call as commodity prices have witnessed a steep increase in the past couple of months.

“The price of natural rubber, which used to be Rs 100 per kg, has gone up to Rs 200 per kg. Copper price has increased by 12-15 per cent and steel has also seen a similar increase,” Pareek said.

Moreover, the yen versus dollar equation continues to be adverse with the Japanese currency gaining. These seem to be no softening of these factors, he added.
