06 February, 2012 The country’s largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki will launch more diesel models to maintain its market share, which has been under pressure for months now, a top company executive has said.
“Our market share has slipped to 40 per cent in 2011. This was due to slowdown in the industry and lower sales of petrol models compared to diesel car production,” Maruti Suzuki Managing Director and Chief Executive Shinzo Nakanishi said here.
The company will now focus on producing more diesel models. The company will be able to produce 300,000 diesel engines a year through Suzuki Powertrain, a joint venture between Maruti and Suzuki Motor’s Gurgaon unit.
Maruti will also buy up to 100,000 diesel engines annually for three years from Fiat India under a pact between the Italian car-maker and Maruti’s parent Suzuki Motor Corp. This is expected to help the company produce more diesel cars, Nakanishi said.
Customer preference here is fast shifting to diesel cars as the fuel is cheaper than petrol. The shift has prompted auto-makers to introduce new diesel variants and increase production of existing variants. Players like Ford have also announced plans to invest on diesel engines.
Maruti’s Swift, Ritz, Swift DZire and SX4 models are sold with 1.3-litre diesel engines.
Meanwhile, Maruti has witnessed a turnaround in monthly sales after seven consecutive months of decline with a 5.18 per cent spike in sales to 1,15,433 units in January. It sold 1,09,743 units in the same month last year. Last December, its sales had declined by 7.1 per cent to 92,161 units.
"Following the turnaround in the auto industry, our first target will be to quickly cover growth of 10-11 per cent as we have had a negative growth of 17 per cent during the April-December, 2011, period," Nakanishi said.
Commenting on the Gujarat plant, Nakanishi said, "We have entered into an agreement for land at Mehsana, in Gujarat. The Gujarat plant will commence production only after we reach full capacity at our Manesar plant (1.8 million).

08 July, 2011 Tata Motors owned Land Rover on Thursday said it will introduce two new variants of SUVs Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport in October this year in the UK, the on-road prices of which will start from 37,995 pounds (about Rs 27 lakh).
Both the ‘2012 Model Year Discovery 4’ and ‘2012 Model Year Range Rover Sport’ will come with 8-speed automatic transmissions and will be powered by 3.0-litre diesel engines, Land Rover said in two separate statements.
While the Discovery 4 will be available from 37,995 pounds onward, the Range Rover Sport’s price will start from 48,795 pounds, it said.
“Improved performance, lower CO2 emissions and enhanced design and equipment levels consolidate the Discovery 4’s position as the most capable and versatile all-purpose vehicle on and off the road today. The Discovery 4 is quite simply in a class of its own,” Land Rover UK Managing Director Colin Green said.
With the new engine, both the upcoming variants will emit 230 grams of CO2 per km, compared to 244 grams every km in previous models. Green said the new features of the 2012 Range Rover Sport will ensure that this car retains its position as one of the most economical high performance SUVs in the market today.
Earlier this week, British marque Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) said it has started production of its SUV Range Rover Evoque at Land Rover’s Halewood facility in the UK. The company said it has already received over 18,000 advance bookings for the vehicle across the world.
The company had doubled its workforce to more than 3,000 employees in order to deliver the Evoque, of which 75 per cent of the production will be exported to over 170 countries that will add about 2 billion pounds to the UK economy.
The launch of the Range Rover Evoque is just one of the 40 new product actions that JLR will carry out in the next five years. This product creation programme is supported by an annual investment of 1.5 billion pounds in developing new models, engines, technologies and vehicle lines.
Currently, the company directly employs about 19,000 people in the UK and indirectly supports up to 1.40 lakh jobs through its supply chain, dealer network and associated business operations.

24 June, 2011 Commercial vehicles maker Force Motors Ltd plans to foray into the passenger vehicle segment by launching sports utility vehicles (SUVs) under Force One brand in July, a top official said on Thursday.
The plan is to sell 4,000 SUVs in the first year of operations, Managing Director Prasan Firodia told reporters. “Our core business remains commercial vehicles, that is our bread and butter. This is another vertical being created as the market is growing,” Firodia said.
He sees long term potential in the segment though economic factors are not showing very positive indications at present. “Growth in the automotive industry is going to be tremendous. We are not looking at this segment for short-term gains,” Firodia said.
India’s auto sales in 2010 had grown at a breakneck pace of 30 percent, but are showing signs of a slowdown as consistently rising interest rates are forcing the middle class to tighten their purse strings.
Car sales rose 7 percent in May, their slowest pace in two years, while sales of commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses rose 16.16 percent from a year earlier.
Force Motors, known for its light commercial vehicles brand Tempo, Matador and Traveller, has already invested about 1.5 billion rupees, over the last 12-18 months, in its plant to manufacture SUVs in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh.
The plant has an installed capacity of 12,000 SUVs, which can be ramped up further, Firodia said. The production for the vehicle will be 75-80 percent localised, while other materials like the interiors and sheet metal stampings will be imported. In the short term, the company expects SUV sales to constitute 25-30 percent of the total, Firodia said without giving details.
For the fiscal year ended March 31, the company posted a 55 percent jump in net sales to 14.8 billion rupees while its profit dipped marginally to 586.2 million rupees.

22 June, 2011 French carmaker Renault on Tuesday said it will launch a new hatchback in India during the Auto Expo in January 2012 that will compete with Maruti Suzuki’s Swift. The car is specifically designed for the Indian market by its design centre in Mumbai.
The French car major said that the next launch will be the Koleos SUV. It will be unveiled in the next few days. The French car maker announced this at an event where it disclosed its product plans and handed over the keys to the first 14 customers.
“In January 2012 we will launch a hatchback in B to B+ segment and it is specifically designed for the Indian customers by our Mumbai centre,” Renault Executive Vice President (Product Planning and Program) Philippe Klein told reporters.
The company will launch the car in segment where Maruti Suzuki India’s premium hatchback Swift is positioned. Klein said the company will launch its sports utility vehicle new Koleos by the end of 2011. Renault said that India will be among the first countries to see the Koleos going on sale. “After the hatchback, our fourth car for the Indian market will be a SUV and its the Duster. We will launch it in the second half of 2012,” Klein said.
The company has already launched its luxury sedan Fluence in India this year. The company had earlier announced to launch five vehicles in India by the end of 2012. All the cars will be assembled at Renault’s Indian facility in Chennai, Klein said.
With a committed investment of Rs 4500 crore by 2015 the alliance plant in Chennai is now fully operational with one assembly line and the second line will be installed by mid-2011 taking the capacity to 4,00,000 cars per year.
According to the company officials, the plant is of flexible type, producing vehicles from both Nissan and Renault on a single line. Renault also plans to set-up a powertrain assembly line in the near future.
Renault and Japanese car maker Nissan joined hands in 2008 to set up a manufacturing facility at Oragadam. While the first hatchback “Micra” was rolled out from Nissan’s stable last year, the flagship luxury sedan “Fluence” from Renault was launched as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit this year.
