24 November, 2011 Supply constraints due to floods in Thailand is wreaking havoc at Honda’s Indian operations and has forced the company to shut down production of the City sedan and Brio compact. It has also cut back the output of the Jazz hatchback to a few hundred units. To tackle the problem of shortage of parts, Honda is making emergency arrangements to source components from locations in China and Japan to normalise output.
Executive said the company will have to slash output by around 95 percent in December and only a few hundred units will be produced to keep the plant running and maintain manpower. The company’s average production is about 6,000 units after the launch of the Brio.
Jnaneswar Sen, senior V-P at Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI), confirmed that output would be badly hit in December, adding that arrangements are being made to tap other areas for sourcing critical parts. “We are looking at China and Japan very keenly. We hope to firm up things soon and return to normalcy in the coming months, though nothing can be confirmed as of now,” Sen said.
Sources said while production of the City has already been stopped, the Brio will be discontinued from next month. Jazz will have a skeletal production, around 250 units, and a few hundred units of the Civic and Accord sedans will also be made. Honda has stopped taking new bookings for the Jazz at its dealerships due to the uncertainty and the model has a waiting list of over six months. The Brio too has been facing a long queue at dealerships.
“The situation is very bad and December could perhaps be one of the worst months for Honda in India,” the sources said. The company has already started informing the customers about the delay in delivery due to the Thailand crisis.
The Brio, which has sold 1,500 units so far, faces a backlog of 6,000 cars. On the Jazz, the pending bookings run up to 4,000 units. Dealer and vendor sources, however,said the situation on the City could improve by the middle of January and on the Jazz and Brio by mid-February. Honda gets a variety of electronic components and underbody parts from Thailand.
The damaging floods came at a time when the company appeared to be coming out of tough times after a massive price correction on the Jazz and the City and launch of the Brio, its lowest-priced car in India.
Thailand was the first market where the Brio was manufactured and India followed later. A lot of the car’s key parts are being sourced from Thailand with which India also has a trade agreement - known as the early harvest scheme - as a part of which components can be imported at lower duty rates.

03 November, 2011 Honda’s production has been “severely” impacted because of the floods in Thailand, a major parts sourcing hub, said a top company official. The company, which is planning to source parts from alternative locations like China and Japan, is now working on informing its customers about possible delay in the delivery of booked cars.
The worst affected will be the company’s new launch Brio and the newly price-refurbished Jazz. Honda is currently sitting on fairly significant bookings, 6,000 units for the Brio and another 4,000 for the Jazz. Honda has, however, decided not to halt production but make do with whatever parts available in its inventory till the alternative supplies kick in.
Jnaneswar Sen, senior vicepresident, Honda Siel Cars India said, “All our models have been hit (by the floods in Thailand) and it’s a pretty serious development. We are facing severe shortage of parts which is unfortunate because the demand is very good for all our models right now. But we have decided not to stop production; we’re looking at a strategy to handle the situation.”
Honda’s strategy, he said, would be to “limit production” to match the parts available till “alternative locations” can be found for the sourcing of affected parts. Honda primarily sources underbody parts and electronic components from Thailand. “We are looking at sourcing from China and Japan to make up for the parts shortfall,” said Sen.
“Honda is not looking at sourcing from Indian vendors because it will not be possible in the short-term. Localisation is top priority for HSCI and had it been possible we would have localised those parts and not imported them,” explained Sen. Although company officials admit the situation is fairly fluid right now, October was a normal month for Honda despite the floods in Thailand which started early last month.
While HSCI has been scouting for alternative locations to source parts in short supply since then, it’s pretty clear that its despatches will be hit in the immediate term.
“We have delivered 1,000 units of the Brio but we know that we will not be able to fulfill our original commitment to our customers on delivery schedules. So we will do the best we can but we will also communicate to our customers about a delay and request them to bear with us,” said Sen.
This is the second time this year that Honda has had to face production shortages due to a force majeure situation . Earlier this year the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan create severe production snags for HSCI along with other Japanese companies. Thailand is a major parts sourcing hub for many Japanese auto majors including Honda and Toyota.
Honda enters into the highly competitive small car segment with the Brio. The new Brio (Pronounced as Br-ee-yo) hatchback has been developed after extensive market surveys on driving needs and lifestyles in India. Brio means 'cheerful' and 'energetic' in Italian and Honda has put in extra efforts to deliver best of safety and comfort features in its maiden small car. The Brio, available in four variants, is priced between Rs 3.95 Lakh to Rs 5.10 Lakh. It is expected to beat the sales figures of Honda's flagship vehicle City. Made in India, the Honda Brio is on par with Honda cars in terms of quality and parts manufactured from plants in Japan. It comes with a 2 years or 40,000 km warranty.
A four cylinder 1.2-litre i-VTEC engine delivers a maximum output of 88 PS @ 6000 rpm and Torque of 109 Nm @ 4600 rpm yields an excellent fuel economy of 18.4 kmpl. The i-VTEC (intelligent Variable Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control) controls the opening of air-fuel intake valves and exhaust valves in accordance with engine speeds. The five-speed manual transmission with optimized gear ratios provides excellent low rpm acceleration and smooth high rpm performance. The unique 'Eco' lamp in the Brio helps drivers to get optimum fuel efficiency.
The McPherson strut suspension in the front and H-shaped torsion beam rear suspension are made for stable road handling and comfortable ride. The electric power steering is stable and stress-free at both low and high speeds.

The Honda Civic is the eighth generation Civic in India which has been given a face-lift in September 2009. Honda Siel Cars India launched the new Honda Civic with aesthetically designed new looks. The Civic, after its launch in the US, comes with some tweaks to suit the Indian road. The Sedan was introduced in India in 2006. The all-independent suspension with McPherson Strut in front and coil over double wishbone with torsion bar in the rear is excellent during high speeds and highway drives, but not a very good mate for bad roads. The suspension system is tweaked for minimal body roll during tight cornering. The all disc brakes with brake assist give instant halt to the mighty car. The power-assisted, collapsible steering is precise and takes speed of the car into consideration for inputs. With all these smartly tuned features, the ride quality of the new Civic takes driving to a new horizon.
The new Honda Civic is not a typical three box character; the A-pillar is shifted forward for better aerodynamics that makes it look like the next generation car. The easy flow design with stylized smokey headlights, new curved 5 point metallic grille, the revamped sporty front bumper and crystalline octagonal combi tail lights are some of the stand out features. The car stands on newly designed alloy wheel. The New Honda Civic comes in five exquisite colours: Crystal Black Pearl, Polished Metal Metallic, Tafeta White, Habanero Red and Alabaster Silver Metallic.

15 June, 2011 Honda has cut the price of its City sedan by up to 66,000 to regain its market leadership after competitors such as Volkswagen Vento and Maruti Suzuki SX4 raced past it in recent months.
Honda Siel Cars on Tuesday brought down the price of the base EMT variant of City to Rs 7.49 lakh (ex showroom Delhi) from Rs 8.15 lakh, while the top variant VAT Exclusive is now Rs 44,000 cheaper at Rs 9,89,100.
The company attributed the price cut to successful implementation of various cost-reduction measures as a result of an initiative started two years ago. “It all began with market feedback that the prices have gone very high,” said a senior Honda official.
Honda’s R&D team, comprising 40 Japanese engineers and 20 Indian engineers, started working on a project to achieve economies of scale in 2009 in anticipation of the launch of its entry-level hatchback Brio. With Brio set for launch during the Diwali season, Honda has combined production of common things like components, leading to economies of scale.
Honda Siel Cars Senior Vice President (Sales and Marketing) Jnaneshwar Sen said, “In anticipation of bigger volumes resulting in economies of scale from the second half of current year, we have achieved considerable cost reduction and have passed on the benefit to customers.”
The City range, which forms over 70 per cent of Honda Siel’s sales, has been sliding in sales in the last three months as customers started preferring diesel rivals such as Volkswagen Vento, Maruti Suzuki SX4 and the recently relaunched Hyundai Verna.
City lost its segment leadership position to Volkswagen Vento in March this year and now trails both Vento and SX4. The new Hyundai Verna, priced much lower than the City, too has been drawing huge customer interest.
While Verna, SX4 and Vento offer both diesel and petrol options, City comes only in petrol variant. This is not helping in a market increasingly preferring diesel models mostly due to frequent rise in petrol prices.
With customers now veering towards diesel cars due to rising petrol prices, Honda has started campaigns focusing on its fuel efficiency. “City is known for fuel-efficiency. We are harping on this fact,” an official said.
Honda does not have any diesel engine, but it’s developing the technology to have such engines in smaller sizes of 1500cc to be fitted in City, Jazz and its other models.
The price cut in City models has sharply reduced its price gap with Honda’s struggling hatchback Jazz. In fact, the entry level City model is now cheaper than the top variant of Jazz. This may drive down sales of Jazz from existing 500 vehicles a month.

The new 9th generation Accord 2.4 is pitted against the likes of Skoda Superb, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes Benz C-Class.
The engine on all the three available variants (Base, Elegance, and Inspire) is the same - 178 bhp 2.4-litre i-VTEC Inline-4. A choice of either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic is offered. Honda has dropped the 3.0-litre V6 engine that was available on the previous model of Accord 2.4. The new engine generates 30 bhp more power. The new E10 engine is capable of running on a combination of 10% ethanol and 90% petrol to give enhanced fuel economy. The fuel efficiency on the new Accord 2.4 has increased by 8 percent.
The chassis of the car has been made 20 percent stiffer and this makes driving in a straight line very easy. Like the successful Honda Civic, the Accord 2.4 too now comes with Formula One inspired paddle shifters. All variants get a tilt/telescopic steering wheel and the top end 2.4 Inspire variant comes with a premium 4-spoke leather steering wheel with an aluminium colour panel and a leather gear shift knob.
When it comes to driving, the car is very agile and responds quickly to inputs. The refined nature of the powerful engine makes the ride very enjoyable. The new Accord 2.4 also accelerates much quicker than its predecessor and gear shifts are smooth and effortless.
The Honda Accord 2.4 has an aggressive front fascia. The new Chrome accentuated front grille, rear chrome garnish and new front bumper adds to the charm of the Accord. The Sunroof now comes as standard across the Accord range, which gives the car an impressive panoramic feeling making it look brighter and larger.
On the interior, the dashboard remains the same. The dual tone finish is very appealing. The plastic used is of good quality and the upholstery is smooth and gives a rich feel. On the whole, the cabin is very classy.
Cabin space is enhanced and occupants get more leg room, shoulder room and thigh support. The driver’s seat gets 8-way power adjustment with lumbar support. Rear seats have independent air vents and air conditioning. The rear seats also get their own audio control knobs.
Addition of Steering mounted cruise control system helps one to cruise at the desired speed to ensure comfort and convenience for the customer with one-touch operation and ORVM with turn indicators makes it more stylish and enhances the looks of the car. The Accord now comes with an advanced improved audio system for improved usability & readability and Jackknife key have also been added to the Accord.
Honda Accord is equipped with Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying braking to the right or left hand wheels as necessary and modulating the engine torque output as required.
