Eco friendly cars is the latest buzzword and car owners will come to know how eco-friendly their cars are, during 2011. The government is planning to launch star labeling for the automobile sector to stipulate the strict fuel efficiency norms for the cars. Thus, in 2011 car owners will be fully aware of the eco friendly status of their cars.

Speaking on the purported initiative, BEE Director General Ajay Mathur told IANS said, "There is a fair degree of movement on standards and labeling for automobiles and the principles on which this will be done have been largely agreed to. So I presume that very soon we should be able to announce the standards and labeling programs for automobiles."    He added, "Standards and labeling will be done for automobiles -- SUVs, cars, other four wheelers -- but it doesn't include trucks and two-wheelers. After we complete this we will start the process of how we can enhance the fuel efficiency of two-wheelers and trucks."

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is a statutory body under the power ministry. The Bureau along with the Ministry of Road and Surface Transport has finalized Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency wherein the fuel economy of an entire fleet of a car manufacturing company is gauged. However, it will take some time before this is implemented.  The BEE has thus been mandated by the Prime Minister's Office to lay down the norms under the Energy Conservation Act.

The labeling scheme was incepted in 2006 and is presently invoked for equipments/appliances like frost-free refrigerators, and tubular fluorescent lamps. Besides, room air-conditioners, direct cool refrigerator, distribution transformer, induction motors, pump sets, ceiling fans, LPG, electric geysers and color TVs are also a part of the labeling scheme. However their main focus is on cars as according to official figures, India has 14 million cars and three million SUVs. The automobile industry is growing at a rate of 14 to 17 percent per annum and annual sales growth is over 12 percent.

The main objectives of the Standards and Labeling Program is to provide an informed choice about the energy saving. The initiative will thereby determine the cost saving potential of the equipment. The initiative is likely to impact the energy savings in the medium and the long run.
