From the house of famous German car manufacturer Porsche, the 911 has arrived. With this, the entire range of Porsche cars is now available in India. The 2-seater 911 convertibles are known for their superb styling and outstanding performance. The 911s are also available in Coupe body style, but the convertibles are more popular.

The car has a sleek body with great aerodynamic design and the quality of the interior is top class. The convertible has exceptional handling, delivers superior performance and provides an exhilarating open air driving experience. The 911 convertible competes with the BMW M6 Convertible in the Indian market.

The 911 convertibles called '911 cabriolets' are available in five variants i.e. Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, and Turbo. The Carrera and Carrera 4 come equipped with a 3.6-litre 6-cylinder boxer engine (H6) that delivers 345 bhp of power. The higher 'S' variants come with larger 3.8-litre 6-cylinder boxers that generate 385 bhp and the 3.6-litre 6-cylinder boxer engine on the top-end 'Turbo' variant produces an immense 480 bhp. Transmission choices on the car are 6-speed manual and 7-speed Tiptronic S automatic. The Tiptronic S automatic gearbox is versatile and can be put into 'manual transmission' mode if required.

The engines on all 911 models are mounted to the rear of the car. The rear-mounted position of the engine ensures a low centre of gravity for the car and ensures optimum road traction.

Small buttons provided inside the cabin enable the driver to control the car's active damper system. Though the electronically controlled dampers, the ground clearance of the car can be adjusted to suit the type of ride. The car can be raised to stand a little higher while driving on bumpy roads.

The engines are enhanced by 'VarioCam Plus' valve timing technology that enables them to generate more power and deliver improved mileage. On the Turbo variant, the engine is clubbed with twin turbocharger units featuring Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) for additional boost in power and thrust.

The Turbo is the quickest of the 911 convertibles. With the manual transmission, it makes 0-100 km/h in just 4 seconds. With the advanced Tiptronic S automatic transmission its 0.2 seconds quicker.

Jaguar XKR is the sleekest of the cats. It has been regarded as one of Jaguar's most iconic cars in British race car history. Its muscular styling and jaw dropping performance makes it the fastest XK-series ever made. It is available in coupe and convertible body styles.

BMW has unveiled the new 6-series convertible. Weirdly, Munich has chosen not to show the new Six at the 2010 LA auto show, where it merely showed the 6-series concept car.

BMW has chosen to launch the 6-series production car as a convertible first. Why? To coincide with the first deliveries in spring 2011, when prospective customers will be getting geared up for some sunshine. The 6-series coupe is scheduled to follow in the autumn of 2011.

What will power the new BMW 6-series then?

Initially there will be just two engine options, and BMW continues its model number confusion.

The 640i has a 3.0-litre flat six single turbo returning 320bhp, 5.7sec 0-100kph.

The 650i has a 4.4-litre V8 twin-turbo returning 407bhp, 5.0sec 0-100kph.

Great, so what else is there to tell?

BMW is keen to push home how usable an all-rounder the new Six is. It describes the new 6-series as a full four-seater with more than ample passenger room. Presumably for your golf buddies, with BMW ramming the point home that the Six's boot will swallow two golf bags with the roof up.

BMW also claims that torsional rigidity is up 50% on the outgoing 6-series convertible.

But, I hear you say, will it outdo the Joneses?

New technical innovations are a little sparce on the 6-series. All the toys you could want are offered, from night vision with pedestrian recognition, lane departure warning system, head-up display and a 12GB hard drive for your music collection.

The problem is, the 6-series is based on the running gear from the new 5-series, so we've seen all these gizmos before. Nearly.

BMW points out it's the first manufacturer to offer in-car email display via your Blackberry's Bluetooth connection. How ironic then that the next time you have a BMW up your backside on the motorway, the driver might actually be listening to an email offering a manhood extension - read out by the new 6-series convertible.

Chevrolet has shown its new Camaro Convertible. No great shakes: it takes the stylish coupe and chops the top.

There's a 308bhp V6 or the 420bhp V8, and prices kick off around $30,000 - over there. Here, expect it to be in the high 30s with the base V6 coupe at around $33k.

Will the Camaro Convertible 'do a blancmange?'

The soft-top roof on the Camaro Convertible has an acoustic headliner to hush the whistles and whooshes of a cabrio and GM quotes a better torsional stiffness than a 3-series CC.

That's some claim, made possible by extra bracing under the bonnet, a stronger transmission tunnel and unerbody reinforcements.

'To compensate for the reduced structure of an open car, engineers often will make the suspension softer, making the convertible a boulevard cruiser,' said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer.
'Instead, we took the more difficult, but better path of bolstering structure rather than softening the suspension. We didn’t change a strut, bushing or spring rate from the Camaro coupe.'

Footnote

The Camaro is now the best-selling coupe in the segment in America.
