Small in size but big in attitude, a pumped-up, track-ready interpretation of the super-smart iQ city car leads a posse of tuned and tweaked Toyota concept and production cars at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The world’s largest annual aftermarket parts show, taking place (14 to 16 January) gives
leading tuning firms and custom car specialists the chance to demonstrate their engineering and design skills, from mild sports accoutrements to the wilder fringes of auto design.


The GRMN (Gazoo Racing tuned by MN) iQ Racing Concept is the latest interpretation of Toyota’s smallest model by its motor sport competition partner. It’s a stand-out model, with its deep front air dam, huge lower air intake and racing wheels, but it is not just about looks: fitted with a tuned- supercharged engine and a roll-cage, it’s cut out for track action.

It has a strong heritage too: Gazoo’s previous iQ concept car was given a limited production run in Japan that sold out immediately in 2009.

G Sports (G’s) have also contributed to the Toyota presentation with Sports Concept versions of both Prius and Yaris, with TRD adding an Auris GT Concept. As well as the cars, Toyota is hosting interactive events at the show, including forums with engineers and racing drivers and virtual driving competitions in Metapolis, an on-line community created by Gazoo Racing.

Hyundai Motors India is mulling a new plant in India and planned to spend Rs 400 crore to build the 1.5-lakh diesel engine plant. The company’s new plant location is not yet finalised.
“While we are channelising more production to India and cutting down exports, the new diesel engines would be fitted into our existing and future cars as local customers are gradually preferring diesel over petrol ,” said HW Park, MD, Hyundai Motor India.
Hyundai Motor is planning for the new plant to meet the growing demand and wait for the final acceptance from the parent company.
“We have witnessed 24% growth in the Indian market even as exports at 2.47 lakh cars were down by 8.5% in 2010 calendar year,” Hyundai’s director (marketing & sales) Arvind Saxena said.
The company will also roll out a new small car below the Santro model from the Chennai plant. “The small car will be the smallest model from Hyundai’s global line-up and India would be one of its lead markets,” Mr. Park said.

These days everyone wants to make a small car. If you don’t have a small car under your portfolio, you are nobody in the auto market.

A similar ambition has been undertaken by Fiat as the top boss Mr. Rajeev Kapoor earlier announced about an Alto competitor in works for 2012. In his speech he said -

“It will be an all-new car, nothing to do with any of our other models and will be priced aggressively. It will compete with the Alto and will have a one-litre engine. The new car will be an India-specific one, made in India, made for India, keeping in mind the country’s unique terrain and temperatures. Our R&D team is working day in and day out to develop the car that meets consumers’ needs in the best manner. The small car market in India is blazing and there is intense competition. The entry level car space excites us”

We are guessing this new model will borrow design cues from the new Uno, Punto and Panda. We can bet a million bucks that Fiat will drop a 900 cc Twin Air petrol motor under the bonnet. May be the higher variants will come with a 1L or a 1.2L engine including the 1.3-liter multi-jet diesel.

We have also spoken about the Project 326 which is the Palio revival, which Brazilian engineers are working on as we speak. Since we lack enough information on the India small car, we sense there is a possibility of the two being related, perhaps both are the same car.

Taking on the kingpin – The Maruti Alto is a tall order. After all, it has been the best seller since the dawn of time. Fiat engineers clearly have the work cut out for them.

As we reported earlier, Chevrolet exhibited the Sail EV at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China last week.

Jointly-developed with the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), the Sail EV showcased is only a concept.

Design wise, the front-end gains inspiration from the Chevrolet Volt. There are turbine style wheels and flush door handles, atypical of a EV.

Power comes from a small electric motor that produces 87 hp and 220 Nm of toque. The Sail EV is able to accelerate to about 130kph and travel up to 150km in a single charge.

The Sail EV isn’t approved for production but there is a strong possibility of it arriving in India next year in the prototype form. GM India has said it will display a concept EV in April 2011.

Unable to price the Micra aggressively, Nissan has understood that the only way to penetrate the Indian market is by developing another inexpensive compact car.

Nissan is working on this small car and the Indian wing is helping them complete the task. Earlier this year, Nissan held talks with Ashok Leyland for a car between the Bajaj-Nissan-Renault ULC and the Micra, but no headway was made.

As wheelosphere.org points out, Nissan could develop this mini car with another objective – Pixo replacement for Europe. The Pixo is the Maruti Suzuki A-Star wearing a Nissan badge. Maruti Suzuki agreed to supply Nissan Pixos till 2013. Beyond this point, Nissan might fill that void by manufacturing the next generation Pixo at its Oragadam plant in Chennai where the Micra is manufactured.

Mr. Kiminobu Tokuyama, Managing Director & CEO, Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd. (NMIPL) to Business Standard -

We plan to have a car below the Micra. We have a significant demand for this segment and we have been studying it. We are, at present, in the concept stage and studying customers

Rumor has it that Volkswagen expressed interest in cosmetically altering the A-Star to fill the product gap under the Polo for India. This might be another reason why Nissan could have chosen to look beyond the A-Star and its partnership with Maruti Suzuki for the future of the Pixo. Recently there were reports of a possible tie-up between Malaysian car maker Proton and Nissan, where the latter would provide its V-Platform to Proton for developing its small car for India.

In 2013, Nissan will manufacture the V-Platform MPV at Oragadam which might not be suited for the Indian market. Nissan will however introduce the NV200 MPV in India by 2012 under the Ashok Leyland-Nissan alliance.

Nissan’s third product for India, from Oragadam, instead of the V-platform MPV, could be the sub-Micra mini car which will serve dual purpose – take on the likes of the Maruti Alto and Hyundai HA here in India, and serve as the Pixo replacement in Europe and other parts of the world.

The old fashioned Mahindra Thar, which was earlier launched in South Africa and Europe, has now been launched in the Indian market with a lot of fanfare. The Mahindra Thar also happens to be India’s first BS IV CRDe diesel engine that comes in soft top. The Mahindra Thar was showcased at the 10th Auto Expo 2010 held at New Delhi, and M&M has kept its promise and delivered the immensely desirable vehicle right before the Christmas.

Mahindra Thar CRDe is powered by a 2.5 litre engine that produces 103.5 bhp power at peak and 247Nm maximum torque at very low RPM (1800-2000 rpm). The Mahindra Thar off-roader comprises bits and pieces of Scorpio and Bolero. Although the Thar is not very comfortable but it gives minimum jerk and keeps the passengers safe. The front seats have enough leg room and open roof assures maximum fun.

Since the Mahindra Thar is an off roader, it has been given classic ladder frame chassis and body-on-frame construction for strength, rigidity and great shock absorbing capability. India has emerged as one of the most lucrative markets for major car manufacturers. After crossing the 1 million production mark, India has become the fourth largest car market in Asia after Japan, South Korea and Thailand. 28 December, 2010 Hyundai Motor India is planning to set up a Greenfield plant. The South Korean company will spend Rs 400 crore to build the 1.5 lakh diesel engine plant, hoping to cater to the rising requirements from domestic market. The company is yet to decide on the location of the plant. Hyundai’s two car manufacturing plants are located in Chennai.
“While we are channelizing more production to India and cutting down exports, the new diesel engines would be fitted into our existing and future cars as local customers are gradually preferring diesel over petrol ,” said HW Park, MD, Hyundai Motor India.
Hyundai sells diesel models of its i20 hatchback and other bigger cars and imports the engines from South Korea. It is also looking for a third car plant in India to meet the growing demand and is awaiting final nod from the parent company.
Hyundai has already increased the allocation to the domestic market to 65% for calendar year 2011, up from the 3.56 lakh cars it sold in India, aggregating 60% of its total year production. And the company also plans to bring a car smaller than the Santro.

Seeking the ultimate level of “mobility space,”‘ the engine, body and suspension are specifically tuned up for a higher level of driving performance. The genuine leather seats are configured in two rows, accommodating four people, and feature a quilted design. Based on the Elgrand Rider, the Premium Concept also features a cabinet with indirect lightning for the ground below and a cool/warm storage box. The custom exterior items such as a smoke-plated front mask, 19-inch wheels and tires and a front protector accentuate the uniqueness of this car.

• Serena Rider
Based on Serena, this custom car adopts punchy aeroform coating and an emblematic front grille design, which are features of the Rider Series of custom cars. Black-themed special seat materials and silver carbon-style instrument shift finisher enhance its sportiness.

• March Bolero
