19 October, 2011 Bookings of cars manufactured by Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) have witnessed a modest rise following the strike at Maruti’s Manesar plant and reduction in production volumes at Gurgaon unit.
“Bookings of Hyundai’s cars have increased to some extent”, R Sethuraman, Sr VP (finance & corporate affairs) of HMIL told reporters, when asked whether the strike at Maruti had helped the company in getting higher bookings.
To a similar query, he said that Hyundai’s market share might rise due to the problem at Maruti.
Launching Hyundai Eon in Kolkota on Tuesday, he said that the company was targeting to sell 1.5 lakh units a year.
Sethuraman said that the production capacity at the Chennai plants would be increased from 6.3 lakh to 6.7 lakh per annum to meet the demand.
He said the company is expected to grow by 10 per cent this fiscal, although there had been a slowdown in industry-wide sales due to rising interest rates and high fuel prices.
With a present market share of 18.3 per cent, the company is targeting a market share of 20 per cent by the end of the financial year.
Country’s second largest car manufacturer after Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai was the biggest exporter of cars from India to 115 countries.

16 December, 2010 Toyota has received around 12,000 pre-sale bookings for the recently launched entry level sedan Etios in the Indian market. Etios is Toyota&rsquos first attempt to foray into the mass-volume compact segment in the country.
“The number of orders is far bigger than I personally expected,” the car’s chief engineer, Yoshinori Noritake said. “We don&rsquot even have the car in our showrooms yet,” he said.
Toyota plans to double its sales in India next year to 145,000 units, with Etios contributing more than half for that. Production of the Etios begins on Dec. 20 at Toyota&rsquos factory near Bangalore. The Japanese car maker is importing engines and transmissions for the Etios, until local engine manufacturing starts in 2012.
The Toyota Etios sedan is priced Rs 496,000 for the standard model. Noritake, who said he has travelled to India 40-50 times since becoming the car&rsquos chief engineer in 2006, says that the company does not plan to launch the car in lower segment but plans to build brand loyalty with the Etios.
Toyota sold 55,000 vehicles in India last year, and acquired a market share of 2.4 percent. It plans to offer a hatchback version, Toyota Liva, of the Etios in April 2011.
