23 November, 2011 Automobile major Hyundai Motor Tuesday launched a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) powered variant of its hatchback i10 priced between Rs.416,144 and Rs.430,659 (ex-showroom Delhi).
“The LPG version of our next-gen i10 is a viable alternative for customers looking at low running cost,” said H.W. Park, managing director and chief executive, Hyundai Motor India Ltd.
The new variant is powered by a 1.1 litre iRDE2 engine which can run on both LPG and petrol. The car has a factory-fitted LPG kit.
“With separate petrol (35 litre) and LPG (34 litre) tanks, the customers have an option to choose from LPG and petrol modes,” the company said in a statement.
The car sports a special LPG tank which offers larger boot space than other LPG-fitted cars.
“The LPG kit in i10 blue drive is impact resistant and is approved by the department of explosives,” the statement said.
The car has been fitted with an alternator management system which controls delivery of power to the battery, which extends the battery life and improves mileage.

08 July, 2011 Maruti has stopped the production of its highly selling premium hatchback Swift. This has been done to make way for the new Swift, which will be launched in late August or early September. Suzuki first unveiled the Swift in 2005 with a sporty sub-compact design.
Dealers have started accepting bookings for the new Swift. Maruti Suzuki has codenamed the new Swift as YP8 and its trial runs are on in the Manesar plant. Maruti currently sells close to 5000 Swifts every month and the car when launched in 2005 had changed the whole face of the India’s hatchback B to B+ segment. Other carmakers were forced to launch cars in the premium hatchback segment.
Suzuki, Maruti’s parent company had unveiled the 3rd generation Suzuki Swift last year in Hungary. In Europe a buyer has the option of 1.3 litre diesel engine and a 1.2 litre petrol engine. It is not known whether Maruti will launch this version of the Swift.
The 3rd generation Swift is slightly larger than the present one. Extensive higher strength steel has been used to make bodyshell lighter and stiffer. Suzuki had said that the new 3rd generation Swift has an improved design, safety, fuel consumption and CO2 emission.
The Swift, which is available in petrol, diesel and CNG versions is currently priced between Rs 3.9-5.5 lakh in India. Swift competes with Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia, Nissan Micra, Fiat Punto and Toyota Liva .
French carmaker Renault last month said it will launch a new hatchback in India during the Auto Expo in January 2012 that will compete with Swift. The car is specifically designed for the Indian market by its design centre in Mumbai.

22 June, 2011 French carmaker Renault on Tuesday said it will launch a new hatchback in India during the Auto Expo in January 2012 that will compete with Maruti Suzuki’s Swift. The car is specifically designed for the Indian market by its design centre in Mumbai.
The French car major said that the next launch will be the Koleos SUV. It will be unveiled in the next few days. The French car maker announced this at an event where it disclosed its product plans and handed over the keys to the first 14 customers.
“In January 2012 we will launch a hatchback in B to B+ segment and it is specifically designed for the Indian customers by our Mumbai centre,” Renault Executive Vice President (Product Planning and Program) Philippe Klein told reporters.
The company will launch the car in segment where Maruti Suzuki India’s premium hatchback Swift is positioned. Klein said the company will launch its sports utility vehicle new Koleos by the end of 2011. Renault said that India will be among the first countries to see the Koleos going on sale. “After the hatchback, our fourth car for the Indian market will be a SUV and its the Duster. We will launch it in the second half of 2012,” Klein said.
The company has already launched its luxury sedan Fluence in India this year. The company had earlier announced to launch five vehicles in India by the end of 2012. All the cars will be assembled at Renault’s Indian facility in Chennai, Klein said.
With a committed investment of Rs 4500 crore by 2015 the alliance plant in Chennai is now fully operational with one assembly line and the second line will be installed by mid-2011 taking the capacity to 4,00,000 cars per year.
According to the company officials, the plant is of flexible type, producing vehicles from both Nissan and Renault on a single line. Renault also plans to set-up a powertrain assembly line in the near future.
Renault and Japanese car maker Nissan joined hands in 2008 to set up a manufacturing facility at Oragadam. While the first hatchback “Micra” was rolled out from Nissan’s stable last year, the flagship luxury sedan “Fluence” from Renault was launched as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit this year.

Our very own country’s beloved car has become the best selling hatch in the world.

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 is the king of the mountain

Yes we are talking about Maruti Suzuki Alto. Our Alto has become the largest selling small car in 2010 beating the global competition black and blue.

Be it VW Golf from Germany or VW Gol from Brazil, our Alto created history by becoming the first car majorly sold and exclusively manufactured in India to become the global best seller.

Volkswagen Golf Volkswagen Golf sells in millions across Europe

Maruti SuzukiAlto – 300,950 – India

Volkswagen – Gol – 293,783 – Brazil

Fiat – Uno – 229,323 – Brazil

Suzuki – Wagon R – 195,000 – Japan

Diahatsu – Tanto – 191,000 – Japan

Volkswagen Gol Volkswagen Gol is South America's favorite

Ever since its launch in 800 cc avatar, Alto has been and setting and then breaking records. The recently launched Alto K10 has spiced up sales figure giving it the opportunity to hit the dream 40,000/month mark. Speculations are rife on a 2-cylinder Alto for 2011, which could replace the entry-level Alto running with the 800's tweaked engine. If Maruti can get the pricing right, there are chances of the Alto doing even better.

Some of the key factors which have made Alto a stand out product:

Brand MarutiMost desirable affordable car in countryFuel efficientPeppy and refined enginesEasy to driveEasiest to maintainBullet proof reliability

No wonder this gem from Maruti is giving sleepless night to competitors. Almost every manufacture wants to be in Alto’s segment but can’t figure out how. Hyundai, Tata, Fiat and Chevrolet would also be offering their products in the same segment in the next couple of years and it would be interesting to see if the king is able to retain its crown.

2012 Hyundai Verna RB Hatchback

By Kaustubh Shinde

Previously we have shown you the spy pics of the Verna RB Hatchback. And we are glad to inform you that the Verna hatchback has been unveiled at the Guangzhou Motor Show a couple of days back. The Verna hatch will measure in at (LxWxH) 4085 x 1700 x 1460mm and will have a wheelbase of 2570mm. The hatch is exactly identical to the sedan with some really aggressive lines through the body and a very stylish rear.

On the engine front, this car may be powered by 2 engines – A 1.4 liter petrol & 1.6 liter petrol with outputs 107 BHP & 122 BHP respectively. The cog swapping duties will be taken care of by a 5 speed gearbox and also a 4 speed automatic gearbox.

As of now this car will only be on sale in the Chinese market. But if the past is any witness, this car cannot be completely ruled out for India.

Hyundai is going to manufacture the RB sedan in India next year and it could consider the hatchback for a position above the i20. Hyundai hasn’t been able to bring the i30 to India due to high costs, either through CKD or CBU. The Verna hatch on the other hand can benefit from the sedan’s localization and go on to repeat the success of the i20 if it delivers in all fronts.

Since reworking this car to bring it under the 4-meter length barrier will not work, Hyundai must use the hatch’s dimensions to its strength. It should offer the same 1.6-liter diesel engine from the Verna on the hatch. Provide an AT with diesel, which isn’t available on the i20 and offer the 1.4-liter petrol with the manual transmission on the hatch, which again isn’t on the i20’s menu. Hyundai can reposition the i20 range to make more room for the RB hatch. Hyundai will not only prove that it can sell two big hatchbacks in India, but if done right a 8+ lakh rupee hatch can do well in India.

Bringing the same car over and above the i20 and pitting it against the Jazz can be an option. However, considering Honda is struggling with Jazz sales numbers, Hyundai will be skeptical to take that long shot. Also, Hyundai should now focus on the rival of brands like Accent, Santro and Sonata.

Hyundai will know that the Jazz’s failure was not completely due to its pricing. For 8 lakh rupees, it did not offer the level of equipment or performance that it should have. If Hyundai puts its diesel engines to good effect, offer a lot of comfort and equipment, and market it seriously, then the RB hatch can prove close-minded auto pundits wrong.
