India has emerged as one of the most lucrative markets for major car manufacturers. After crossing the 1 million-production mark, India has become the fourth largest car market in Asia after Japan, South Korea and Thailand. While we a saw a number of small car launches in the year 2010, there were a few bigger ones that begged our attention to be included in the list. In 2010 many international car makers including Toyota Motors, Nissan Motors, Chevrolet and Volkswagen launched small cars and mid size cars for the Indian roads.Nissan's first small car came in the form of the cute and curvy Micra. The Nissan Micra's retro looks attracted an immediate 'love it' or 'loathe it' response. The small car is extremely spacious, user-friendly and is equipped with a number of premium features such as key-less entry and start-stop engine switch. Initially, Nissan launched the Micra with a 1.2 litre petrol engine and recently we got the diesel variant too. Nissan claims that the diesel Micra gives a fuel efficiency of 23 kmpl* (ARAI Test). However, the sparse dealership network in the country is preventing the company from selling the car in outstanding numbers. The price of Micra starts from Rs. 4.35 lakh.
Skoda, in a desperate bid to get the attention of the small car buyers in India, launched the revamped version of the Fabia. Along with cosmetic upgrades, the new Fabia also offered new engine options. The engine options for the new Skoda Fabia include 1.6 MPI, 1.2 TDI CR and 1.2 MPI. Improved safety features in the new Fabia included Dual Front Airbags, ABS (Antilock Brake System), EBC, height and reach adjustable steering wheel. And if all these were not enough to pull the customers to the dealerships, Skoda also brought down the price of the car. The new Skoda Fabia starts at Rs.4,35,000 (Ex-Showroom Price New Delhi).
Toyota also showed its allegiance to the Indian mass market by launching the Etios sedan. Launched in a single petrol engine (2NR-FE engine - 1.5 litre or 1496cc 16V DOHC engine) variant, the Etios can only count on its 'Toyota' name and super-affordable price to become popular in the market. But, by all means, these two factors have already helped the car reach overwhelming sales numbers. Just within 15 days of its launch, the Etios has received 12,000 booking orders. The Toyota Etios prices start at Rs.4,96,000 (Ex-Showroom Price New Delhi).
Chevrolet Beat came as a fresh breath of new design from the house of General Motors. The car proved its potential not just for the sinking company, but also for the first-time car buyers in India. The funky style elements, bold lines and motorcycle inspired dashboard got the attention it deserved and brought huge sales figure for GM. The Chevrolet Beat, powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, 79 bhp at 6200 rpm and a torque of 108 Nm at 4400 rpm.. The price of the Beat starts at Rs Rs.3,93,994 (Ex-Showroom Price New Delhi) lakh.
The German carmaker launched the Polo to work its charm in the mass hatchback market, and if statistics are anything to go by, we would say that it has. The safe and luxurious feel that are usually the benchmark of German designs have worked out in the favour of the small car. Volkswagen Polo, available in 1.2 litre petrol, 1.6 litre petrol and a 1.2 litre diesel engine options, comes equipped with premium convenience and comfort features. The Volkswagen hatchback allows keyless entry with remote opening and has a multifunctional display. It is all-ready with advanced occupant safety with an electronic anti-theft immobilizer. In addition to the strong wheels, it also has an Anti-Lock Braking System and airbags for the driver and passengers. The price of Polo starts at Rs. 4.88 lakh.
The South Korean carmaker tried to revive the aging Verna with some upgrades in the car. While Hyundai refrained from changing anything in the engine department, there were significant changes in the interiors and exterior designing. The Verna Transform is also equipped with safety features such as height adjustable seat belts, anti lock brakes (ABS) and EBD. The Hyundai Verna Transform comes with collapsible steering column, central locking system, child proof rear door locks, front fog lamps, and clutch lock system. It also comes with keyless entry and anti-lock brakes but only in the top-end variants. The BS IV compliant Hyundai Verna Transform has been priced in the bracket of Rs 6.55 lakh to Rs 8.38 lakh. The top-end 1.5 SX VGT (AT) is priced at Rs 9.21 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).
