23 November, 2011 Automobile major Hyundai Motor Tuesday launched a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) powered variant of its hatchback i10 priced between Rs.416,144 and Rs.430,659 (ex-showroom Delhi).
“The LPG version of our next-gen i10 is a viable alternative for customers looking at low running cost,” said H.W. Park, managing director and chief executive, Hyundai Motor India Ltd.
The new variant is powered by a 1.1 litre iRDE2 engine which can run on both LPG and petrol. The car has a factory-fitted LPG kit.
“With separate petrol (35 litre) and LPG (34 litre) tanks, the customers have an option to choose from LPG and petrol modes,” the company said in a statement.
The car sports a special LPG tank which offers larger boot space than other LPG-fitted cars.
“The LPG kit in i10 blue drive is impact resistant and is approved by the department of explosives,” the statement said.
The car has been fitted with an alternator management system which controls delivery of power to the battery, which extends the battery life and improves mileage.

08 July, 2011 Tata Motors owned Land Rover on Thursday said it will introduce two new variants of SUVs Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport in October this year in the UK, the on-road prices of which will start from 37,995 pounds (about Rs 27 lakh).
Both the ‘2012 Model Year Discovery 4’ and ‘2012 Model Year Range Rover Sport’ will come with 8-speed automatic transmissions and will be powered by 3.0-litre diesel engines, Land Rover said in two separate statements.
While the Discovery 4 will be available from 37,995 pounds onward, the Range Rover Sport’s price will start from 48,795 pounds, it said.
“Improved performance, lower CO2 emissions and enhanced design and equipment levels consolidate the Discovery 4’s position as the most capable and versatile all-purpose vehicle on and off the road today. The Discovery 4 is quite simply in a class of its own,” Land Rover UK Managing Director Colin Green said.
With the new engine, both the upcoming variants will emit 230 grams of CO2 per km, compared to 244 grams every km in previous models. Green said the new features of the 2012 Range Rover Sport will ensure that this car retains its position as one of the most economical high performance SUVs in the market today.
Earlier this week, British marque Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) said it has started production of its SUV Range Rover Evoque at Land Rover’s Halewood facility in the UK. The company said it has already received over 18,000 advance bookings for the vehicle across the world.
The company had doubled its workforce to more than 3,000 employees in order to deliver the Evoque, of which 75 per cent of the production will be exported to over 170 countries that will add about 2 billion pounds to the UK economy.
The launch of the Range Rover Evoque is just one of the 40 new product actions that JLR will carry out in the next five years. This product creation programme is supported by an annual investment of 1.5 billion pounds in developing new models, engines, technologies and vehicle lines.
Currently, the company directly employs about 19,000 people in the UK and indirectly supports up to 1.40 lakh jobs through its supply chain, dealer network and associated business operations.

03 May, 2011 After rolling out five compressed natural gas (CNG) models last year, India’s largest passenger car maker, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL), is mulling a CNG platform for all its makes.
Speaking at the sidelines of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers’ conference here, Alok Jaitley, general manager, homologation-environment planning, MSIL, said: “We are working on CNG models. We have already launched five vehicles on this platform and eventually plan to offer all our models on a CNG platform.”
Maruti has 11 models in the market, excluding its two completely built units, the Grand Vitara sports utility vehicle and the Kizashi sedan.
MSIL introduced CNG-driven variants of its Alto, WagonR and Estilo small cars, the multi-utility Eeco and the SX4 sedan last July. Already, the CNG variants comprise nearly 10 per cent of the net sales of these models, which are available only in Delhi and the National Capital Region, Maharashtra and Gujarat, Jaitely said. The company plans to offer the CNG variants in other states as the network of CNG stations expand. At present, the gas network covers not more than 28 per cent of the overall vehicles market.
“Gujarat is one of the major markets for our CNG vehicles,” said I V Rao, managing executive officer-engineering, MSIL, adding that Delhi was the largest market for CNG as of now. The cost of operating a CNG vehicle is almost a third of a petrol car. CNG costs Rs 29.30 per kg, as compared to Rs 62 a litre for petrol and Rs 40 a litre for diesel.
