A part of auto conglomerate Volkswagen, the company’s wholly owned subsidiary Skoda Auto India expects the Rapid to become its best-selling car in the country, surpassing compact car Fabia’s numbers.
“This car is specifically designed for India and the launch will be the global launch for the car. At a later stage, it may be introduced in different markets across the world,” Skoda Auto India Marketing Head Tarun Jha said. The company will sell the car specifically in the Indian market and is betting big on the model, he added.
“We have not decided anything about the exports yet as the car is meant for the domestic market. However, we may export the Rapid to some neighbouring countries later,” Jha said without sharing details. The company currently does not export any of its models from India, he added.
Talking about sales, Jha said: “It may become the best-selling car for us in India. It may be a game changer for us.” He said the company’s current best-selling car is Fabia. It sells about 1,200-1,500 Fabia units every month. Skoda Auto India Board Member (Sales and Marketing) Thomas Kuehl said: “We will compete against the Honda for the petrol variant of Rapid, while it will be Hyundai for the diesel variant.“
The company is also increasing its dealership network to meet the possible increased demand of the Rapid. “Currently we have 82 dealerships and it will be increased to about 100 by the end of this year. Next year, we will add another 20 outlets,” Jha said. The company will target mainly Tier-II and III cities for expansion of its dealership network, he added.
Earlier this month, Skoda Auto had announced that it would start production of its entry-level sedan Rapid from the VW Group’s Chakan plant, near Pune.
Skoda also produces its compact car Fabia at the plant. The Chakan plant was set up by Volkswagen, which manufactures models such as the Polo and Vento. It has invested 580 million euros on the plant, which has an annual production capacity of 1.1 lakh units.

21 September, 2011 Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan’s Indian subsidiary on Tuesday launched its sedan car Sunny priced between Rs.5.75 lakh and Rs.7.68 lakh (ex-showroom).
“We are certain that Nissan Sunny will redefine the dynamics of the Sedan segment in India,” said Gilles Normand, corporate vice president, Africa, Middle East and India, Nissan Motor Co. The new car would compete with other mid-size sedans like Verna Fluidic, Ford Fiesta, Honda City, SX4 and Fiat Linea.
The company said the car would be produced at its Oragadam plant near Chennai with 85 percent localized parts.“We have been able to aggressively position it thanks to localization in excess of 85 percent, which also reiterates our commitment to India,” said Normand.
The company further said that bookings for the new sedan would be accepted from Sep 21 and the deliveries would be made in October.
“Sunny with a 16.95 km per litre of fuel economy will be available to customers across the country without any waiting period for delivery,” the company said in a statement.
The sedan is powered by a four-cylinder, 1.5-liter double overhead camshaft petrol engine, which can churn out a power of 99 PS at the rate of 6,000 rpm. The car boost of a large rear knee room for rear seat passengers, large centre armrest with cup holders in the rear seat.
The 10th generation of car launched Tuesday traces its lineage back to 1966 and till date has sold more than 16 million units in 140 countries.

04 August, 2011 German automobile manufacturer Audi Wednesday launched a new variant of its executive class sedan Audi A6 in the price range of Rs 37.7 lakh to Rs 47 lakh.
“The launch of the new Audi A6 is in line with our top down strategy for India,” said Michael Perschke, head, Audi India.
According to Perschke, the new A6 combines new technologies and fuel efficient engine.
“The new A6 is available with wide array of innovation like lightweight technology, adaptive air suspension, LED headlamps,” Perschke said.
The Audi model range in India includes Audi A4, Audi A6, Audi A8, Audi A7 Sportback, Audi Q5, Audi Q7, Audi RS5, and the super sports cars Audi R8 and Audi R8 Spyder.

The BMW M Series is a line of luxury cars manufactured by the German automaker BMW. Brought to India in 2007, the BMW M Series is available in three models: M5 Sedan, M6 Coupe, and M6 Convertible. Maximum acceleration can be achieved by launch control, which ensures that speed is maintained across the entire range of gear changes.

The BMW M5 Sedan comes equipped with perforated and ventilated compound disc brakes, which perfectly complement the performance of the gusty V-10 engine. For added support, the M5 Sedan is equipped with a variable M differential lock, which offers high driving stability and optimum traction, especially when pulling out of curves. This also prevents spinning of the drive wheels. Even on slippery terrains, the M differential lock supplies that decisive extra portion of pulling power. This system not only optimises handling but also supports the thrust from the rear-wheel-drive.

The BMW M5 is also available with an optional head-up display with an M indicator, which enables the driver to keep an eye on the most important information by projecting speed, navigation directions, and check control data onto the windscreen for optimum visibility. It can also be activated to display the SMG gear selected by the driver, the rev count as a dynamic graph curve, and the optimum moment to change gear.

Also standard on the BMW M5 Sedan is the MDrive Manager, which can individually configure key properties, such as engine performance and shift programs, for optimum flexibility using the MDrive button. The pre-configured settings can be activated at the push of a button by the MDrive control on the steering wheel. Available settings include digital motor electronics (DME), seven-speed SMG Drivelogic, a dynamic stability control (DSC) system, and an M-specific head-up display.

The BMW M5 Sedan epitomizes class and style. The M5 Sedan measures 4,855 mm in length and stands on a wheelbase of 2,889 mm. The front fascia is adorned by a body-colour bumper, a twin-grille that wears the BMW badge on its forehead, and stylish headlights.

The M5 Sedan comes with an aluminum chassis for maximum driving pleasure. It also comes with optimised spring dampers, high body-shell mounting, and a range of settings available for the electronic damper control (EDC) system, due to which this chassis offers optimum directional stability and sharp handling on curves. It looks distinct with powerful curves on the bonnet and dynamic lines that run from the thrusting front section right through to the striking rear end with its four chrome-plated stainless steel exhaust pipes.

The BMW M5 Sedan features an instrument panel that includes illuminated, white scale rings and red needles. It also comes standard with rain-sensing front wipers, a rear defogger, and a rear wiper. It has a fuel tank capacity of 70 litres. Some other amenities include an air conditioner, power windows, a power steering, power door locks, a tiltable steering column, tinted window glass, electrically-adjustable outside mirrors, and cup holders.

The body-shell of the BMW M5 Sedan is extremely stiff and resilient, which maximises passenger comfort as well as safety. 18 January, 2011 Audi India has re-launched the R8 with upgraded V-10 engine. Audi India Director Michael Perschke said the launch of this car would boost the company’s image in the Indian market as the earlier version of the car has been voted the “Supercar of the Year in 2008”.
He also mentioned that the company hoped to sell 4,500 units this year as compared to 3,003 units in 2010. Audi India also wants to enhance its dealership network from the present 14 to 20 by this year end. “This year, we will have a presence in Surat, Ludhiana, Nagpur and Indore. We want to take advantage of the strong brand image we have,” he said.
The Audi R8 has been launched as a CBU. Audi currently assembles A4, Q6 and Q5 models at its Aurangabad plant in Gujarat. The plant, with a single shift, has a capacity to produce 4,500-5,000 units.
Audi also plans to launch three newer versions of the A8, A7 and A6 series this year in the country with the aim of increasing its domestic market share.
“We will launch the A8 with a larger wheelbase by the end of January or beginning February. Then we will launch A7 in May-June and later in the fourth quarter of 2011 we will launch the A6,” Mr. Perschke said.
Stating that Audi has been witnessing stiff competition in India with entry of many luxury carmakers, he said the launches would help the company achieve a 23-25 per cent market share.
“In China and Japan, we are the number one (car maker). In India and in the USA, we are growing very fast. In India ... you (carmaker) need to be patient. We intend to reach 23-24 per cent market share this year of the targeted 30 per cent,” he said.

AR Rehman Brand Ambassador with Toyota Etios Hatchback "Liva"

Toyota has received high number of bookings for its new Etios Sedan; the company is considering to offer a unique way to tackle the customer who booked the sedan by giving them an option to shift to the company’s compact car Liva, which will be launched in the month of March 2011.

At the same time, the company is also considering to marginally increase the production of Etios to accommodate the rush.

According to sources, Toyota is worried that the seven to eight months’ waiting period for Etios may prompt customers to shift to rival brands. So, it is working on a plan to offer those with Etios bookings the option to go for the compact Liva, though details are still being worked out. It is not yet clear whether these people will get a priority in the delivery of the 1200cc petrol-engine Liva , which is likely to be priced around Rs 4 lakh.

The company is currently doing this to ensure that the customer will stay within the Toyota fold, while getting an option to cut down on their waiting periods. The company has already started delivering the Etios sedan earlier this month, and so far it has received bookings over 18500 units.

Toyota Kirloskar deputy MD (sales & marketing) Sandeep Singh said, “We are looking at various options, and a concrete plan is yet to be firmed up.”

Toyota plans to produce around 70000 units in the year 2011 between the Etios Sedan and Liva Hatch in 2011.

“Our manufacturing team is looking at this and a decision on enhancing production will be taken towards the end of February. However, if it happens, the increment in production may not be a major one. Whatever happens will be through improved efficiency and tweaking things here and there,” Singh said.

On the other side, the company is currently ramping up numbers at its plant and will start second-shift operation to meet the demand and the production will come to 200000 units annually though reaching this capacity will take time.

TKM targets to sell around 300000 to 350000 units by 2015.

Nissan Sunny SedanAs we have reported several times before, the Nissan V-Platform sedan dubbed Sunny has been unveiled at the 8th China (Guangzhou) International Motor Show. The vehicle will be sold in China starting January 2011 and the release informs us that 170 countries are on the Sunny’s radar.

Following the success of our first locally made car –the Nissan Micra, we are happy to reveal the first visuals of the second car to be produced in India. The model will be launched in India in the second half of 2011.

The Sunny might carry a different name in India and is expected with a 1.6-liter petrol engine and the Micra diesel’s 1.5-liter engine.

On looking at the images, the welcome additions are height adjustable rear head rests and rear AC vent. The rear grab rails are mounted using pulleys and a sun roof is another distinct feature.

Coming to the dashboard, the center console has changed. The AC vents are square. The twin similarly sized dials are easy to read and the hatch’s ORVM will be good for the sedan too. Automatic transmission should be offered in India at a later stage. Otherwise things stay similar to the Micra.

The sedan on the outside looks nothing like the hatch. The tail portion is similar to the Teana while the front end has gained considerable mass.

Nissan Sunny teaser

Nissan has placed giant cards at the Guangzhou Auto Show teasing the Nissan Sunny. The Nissan Sunny sits on the Micra’s platform and will come to India during Diwali 2011. Starting on December 21, the Guangzhou Auto Show will host the unveiling of the Nissan Sunny and the Chevrolet Sail EV, both expected in India next year.

The Nissan Sunny could continue in some countries with the hatchback’s 1.2-liter engine. In India however, Nissan is said to be considering the 1.5-liter diesel engine and a new 4-cylinder 1.6-liter petrol engine. Nissan isn’t expected to price the sedan aggressively. We are not expecting the starting price to fall below 8 lakh rupees.

Renault India is currently is full force testing its Fluence sedan in Indian roads from its plant. The company has stated that it will launch the sedan during Q2 2011 and will be around April next year.

The company has developed this model with Renault-Nissan’s C-platform that shares the platform with Meganne III. The Sedan might be getting a tuned version of the 1.5ltr dCi engine that will deliver more power than the Logan car.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor held a press meet in Kolkata today to announce the company's entry into the highly competitive B Segment with the launch of the Etios Sedan, the car that has been developed specifically for Indian customers - 'World First, India First, My First'. Toyota had also announced the name of the hatchback version, the Etios Liva.

The Etios sedan will be available in four variants, J, G, V and VX, competitively priced between Rs. 5,03,198/- and Rs. 6,94,985/- ex showroom Kolkata. The product highlights include innovative styling, best-in-class cabin and luggage space, superior comfort, impressive fuel efficiency and the legendary Toyota QDR.

Mr. Koji Nagata (Executive Managing Coordinator & Director, TKM), Mr. Yugo Miyamoto (Senior Managing Coordinator) and Mr. Ramesh R K (General Manager-Marketing, TKM) addressed the media.

Mr. Yugo Miyamoto, Senior Managing Coordinator, Sales, TKM spoke about the development of the product, he said: "It was very important to understand the needs of Indian car buyers and this was done by extensive research. We found that our target customers are highly price conscious but at the same time want good mileage, space and style. One of the strong points of the Etios is its True Sedan design. The Etios has been designed as a Sedan platform and not as a Hatch with a boot. It is smartly packaged with all the attributes for Indians who love to travel with their families - boasts best-in-class cabin and luggage space, ergonomic interiors and superior ride comfort."

Talking about the Etios Sales and Marketing strategy in India, Mr. Koji Nagata, Executive Managing Coordinator & Director, Marketing, TKM, said: "We have an elaborate Marketing strategy planned for the Etios and it all started with the roping in Mr. A.R.Rahman as our brand ambassador who we believe was a perfect fit with the brand values of our product.

We are also prepared to provide our customers a one class above experience, what we refer to as the Q Class Experience. In view of this effort, we have undertaken various initiatives: (a) Express Maintenance Service - Services and delivers the vehicle to the customer in 60 mins, (b) eCRB (Evolutionary Customer Relationship Building) - A tool that keeps the customer informed about the status of the vehicle that has been given for servicing."

Mr. Ramesh R K, General Manager - Marketing, TKM added by saying, "We are now gearing up to cater to a whole new segment of customers. We have expanded our dealer network to reach out to the tier II and tier III cities, we will complete 150 dealerships by the end of 2010 ".

The Etios is very important for Toyota and the company believes this launch marks the beginning of a new era for Toyota in India. In fact this launch will enable Indian customers in the middle income group to own an aspirational Toyota vehicle for the first time. The production of the Etios will begin as planned in the new plant which is the most environmentally friendly automobile manufacturing plant in the country today.

Earlier this year Toyota had announced its plans to begin production of engines and transmissions at the Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts in the third quarter of 2012 that will help in increasing the localisation content of the Etios.

Vehicle Outline

Exterior: A distinctive front grille with a smile line, sculpted surface and dynamic character-line in the front and rear, enhance the presence of the Etios. The rear has a fluent flowing C pillar, rounded end and three-dimensional combination lamps that enrich the vehicle's exterior from different angles.

Interior: The seats are ergonomically designed units with integrated head rests. An instrument panel clearly divided into the information area and operation area with a large centre meter provides excellent visibility. The Etios has class best cabin and luggage space of 595L, a spacious 13L cooled glove box, seven one litre bottle holders, mobile holder and many more such useful storage spaces inside the car.

Performance and Comfort

A newly developed 1.5L, 16V DOHC engine coupled with a 5-Speed manual transmission that produces high output for best-in-class driving performance. The torque is available at low rpm for less gear shifting and stress-free city driving.

The Etios has a superior mileage of 17.6kmpl which is ARAI tested. Electric power steering for excellent maneuverability and tilt steering ensures a good ergonomic driving experience. The steering comes with audio controls for comfort at the driver's fingertips. The flat type rear floor design offers ease of movement for rear seat passengers. With its rigid body structure and world class Mac Pherson Strut, the Etios has superior dampening performance providing superior ride comfort. A class-first 'clean air filter' which is standard across all grades for purified air in the cabin.

(d) Safety

The Etios has various active and passive safety features ensuring the car matches global safety standards. The various safety features are (i) Energy absorbing body shell (ii) Driver & Passenger Air bags and (iii) ABS with EBD.

Its centrally located combimeter reduces eye movement and hence the driver can concentrate on the road.

To adopt to the various diverse climate and usage conditions in India, special treatment and countermeasures have been implemented:

Toyota Motor Corp  has received 12,000 orders for its Etios sedan in India. The bookings of the Etios Sedan kicked ff on December 1. The company aims at an annual sales target of 70,000 units.

The Etios has been designed for the fast-growing Indian market. Currently the Etios is receiving good response.

“The number of orders is far bigger than I personally expected,” the car’s chief engineer, Yoshinori Noritake, told reporters in Tokyo. “We don’t even have the car in our showrooms yet,” he said.

Etios Production is slated to begin on December 20 at Toyota’s factory near Bangalore. The Etios engine and transmission will be imported until local engine production starts in autumn 2012 and transmission production in early 2013. – Stay Tuned !

Renault India is currently is full force testing its Fluence sedan in Indian roads from its plant. The company has stated that it will launch the sedan during Q2 2011 and will be around April next year.

The company has developed this model with Renault-Nissan’s C-platform that shares the platform with Meganne III. The Sedan might be getting a tuned version of the 1.5ltr dCi engine that will deliver more power than the Logan car.

02 December, 2010 Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has said that the company is developing a diesel engine for mid-size sedan, which will be ready by the middle of 2011.
“Currently work is going on for developing a diesel engine for mid-sized sedans. Our engineers are developing it internally and we are hopeful of getting it ready by mid (of) next year,” MSI Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi said.
He also said that the company will utilise the new engine for launching the diesel variant of its premium sedan SX4. MSI currently sources diesel engines for Swift, DZiRE and Ritz from Italian carmaker Fiat.
The company had announced an investment of over Rs 3,500 crore to expand capacity at the Manesar facility. Talking about the company’s upcoming second and third production units at its Manesar facility, Nakanishi said, “Opening of the second plant will be preponed by about six months to the end of 2011. We are also trying to advance operations at the third plant, which is scheduled to start in 2013.”
At present, MSI has an annual capacity of 8.5 lakh units at its Gurgaon plant, and the Manesar plant can produce 3.5 lakh units per annum, with the overall capacity of 12 lakh units per year.
He said that MSI will close down the operations at the Gurgaon and Manesar facilities from December 25, 2010 to January 2, 2011 for annual maintenance work.
