30 September, 2011 When Anand Mahindra launched the much-awaited XUV 500 Wednesday evening, the vice chairman & managing director of Mahindra & Mahindra invited those present to guess the price of the feature-packed sports utility vehicle. The estimates that flew around amidst the glitz were mostly on the higher side of Rs 13 lakh.
Few expected the jaw-dropping price range that was announced 12 hours later: Rs 10.8 lakh (ex-Delhi) for the base version, and Rs 12.88 lakh for the fully-loaded top-end XUV 500 with all-wheel drive.
The XUV 500 may well make the going extremely tough for Tata Motors’ crossover Tata Aria, which is priced higher but lags behind in features, and may impact top-end Scorpio and even premium off-roaders such as Ford Endeavour.
It looks an ideal vehicle for India’s largest utility vehicle maker’s global ambitions. “The XUV 500 will get us the high seat in global auto world. It is a strong and bold step towards becoming a globally recognized SUV brand,” Anand Mahindra said during the press conference in Pune.
The company will launch the vehicle in South Africa in a couple of days. It plans to make inroads into Australia and Latin America in the next six months. M&M will also drive the XUV 500 into Western Europe, Russia and China where it has no presence. M&M aims to export XUV 500 to over 30 countries in the next couple of years. It also plans assembly of the vehicle at its subsidiary Ssangyong's plants in South Korea and Brazil.
M&M will begin bookings for the XUV 500 in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Pune on Saturday. It will be rolled out across the country in 6-9 months.
The XUV 500 helps M&M enter the premium SUV market. It confirms to Europe crash regulations and is equipped with a host of safety features like ABS, EBD, ESP and six airbags. It is loaded with more features than even premium sports utility vehicles like Chevrolet Captiva, Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner.
Yet it was developed with an investment of 650 crore, which is 10 percent lower than development cost in the past, said people involved with the project.
Despite the aggressive price tag, Anand Mahindra said it has not compromised on margins. “For M&M the bottomline always comes first and our focus will remain the same,” he said.
Industry experts say that its monocoque frame construction makes the vehicle lighter and cheaper to produce than Tata Aria, which is built ladder-on-frame construction.

Small is the new BIG.

Recently we got you a story of how Mitsubishi is planning to get aggressive in India and what needs to be done. One of the interesting points was to get a small car for the Indian market. Well our words have been heard instantaneously.

Mitsubishi Global Small Car

Mitsubishi has released renderings of a global small car that is expected to debut at Geneva in March 2011. The car is expected to have 1.0 to 1.2L engine mated to a CVT gearbox and will make it to the showroom floors by 2012. The global small car is also expected to have some fuel saving wizardry and regenerative breaking.

The front of the car for some odd reason looks like a re-skinned Nissan Micra. Doesn’t that speak volumes about Mitsubishi’s expansion plans? :)

Mitsubishi Motors Lineup at the 2011 Geneva International Motor Show

Tokyo, January 18, 2011 – Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will give the global premiere of the MITSUBISHI Concept Global Small (show model), a concept car based on the features of “compact”, “affordability”, and “high fuel efficiency” at the 81st Geneva International Motor Show which runs from March 1 through March 13 at the Geneva Palexpo exhibition and conference complex (opening to the general public on March 3).

MMC will display a total of 12 vehicles (6 during public days), including vehicles already on sale in Europe, in addition to the 100% electric i-MiEV, of which about 2,500 units have already been shipped to Europe within three months since its start of production and shipment in October 2010.

The MITSUBISHI Concept Global Small is the concept model of the compact passenger vehicle that is planned for production in March of 2012 at the MMC’s new third factory in Thailand.

The features of the MITSUBISHI Concept Global Small include good maneuverability and easy operation, an inherent of a compact car, accomplished in to a highly efficient package that can comfortably seat five adults. In addition, the MITSUBISHI Concept Global Small achieves top-of-class fuel efficiency, with CO2 emissions in the mid-90g/km range due to:
• Usage of an idling stop mechanism
• A 1.0 – 1.2L class compact engine equipped with a regenerative braking system
• Weight trimming to the most complex parts
• Reduced running resistance in the engine, new-generation CVT, brakes, and tires
• A body shape that greatly reduces aerodynamic resistance.

09 January 2011

By Tim Pollard

Hyundai has issued this solitary teaser photograph of the new Veloster. It's a coupe-cum-hatchback, along the lines of the VW Scirocco.

No details have been confirmed yet, ahead of its planned debut at the North American International Auto Show, aka the Detroit show in January 2011.

Hyundai Veloster: the background

The Hyundai Coupe slid quietly off sale in 2009, and the Veloster - promised in concept form a couple of years ago - fires the Koreans back into the semi-sporting market.

We'll get the new Veloster in Europe, too. Sales are tipped in October 2011.

What's underneath the Veloster?

The architecture underpinning the new Veloster is all Hyundai i30. So it's front-wheel drive, and will feature engines such as Hyundai's new downsized 1.6 petrol turbo.

Interestingly, unlike MINI's oddball Clubman, Hyundai has engineered the solitary rear door for left- and right-hand drive.

Seen here doors akimbo, you'll spot that the Hyundai Veloster won't dump its passengers on the wrong side of the road outside your children's school.

Looks promising - if a cramped, quasi sporting hatch-coupe mash-up is your thing. And judging by the number of Sciroccos we see on the roads, it might be a sleeper hit for Hyundai.

s leading auto manufacturer launches the first television commercial. The TV commercial was launched in a bid to revive the sales which dipped to 509 units last month. The commercial was created by Rediffusion Y&R, and portrays the Nano as a roomy and sturdy car. The Nano is shown as an enviable car by virtue of its looks and performance.

The all new Tata Nano needs a touch- feel advertisement to create a phenomenal impression in our minds. The tag line- “key to your happiness” is aptly projected in the television commercial. A little girl is shown asking her grandmother when the Tata Nano will come home. The Tata Nano finally arrives, getting admiring glances all the way. The yellow Tata Nano car truly stands out as is drives through rough terrains to reach the house on a hilltop.

The small town neighborhood gathers to see the brand new Tata Nano car. The little girl hugs the car and the family prepares a traditional welcome. As is the belief in India, the girl applies some of her eyeliner on the car to prevent the ill effects of the prying eyes. This innovative ad signals a U turn in the marketing strategy for Nano. Besides, Tata motors have launched a multi-crore media campaign to rebuild Nano’s brand image, which had taken a beating a while ago. Tata motors have geared up for a countrywide network to sell Nanos including 1,000 odd special Nano kiosks, off the shelf. It also aims to reach higher volumes of 12,000-15, 000 units per month by April 2011.

The Tata Nano commercial, conveys the simple message that two-wheeler and three-wheeler owners may easily shift to Tata Nano.  According to advertisement executives, the company is also planning another television campaign early next year.
