New Mitsubishi Pajero Car - Exterior 7.5 / 10.5 km/l (city/highway), 2.8L I-4 Diesel
5-speed Manual Transmission (MT) * Estimated values may differ under various conditions.

Leather upholstery Super Select All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Two gear ratios (shift on fly) Rugged body Loaded powertrain Comfortable seating

To tap the huge potential of the SUV market in India, Mitsubishi, with its Indian partner Hindustan Motors (HM), imported the Pajero in March 2002. Initially, the Pajero was to be imported as completely-built-unit and sold in select dealerships in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kochi, and Chandigarh. Now, HM produces the lower-end 2,800cc diesel version of the vehicle, importing complete knock-down units. The new Mitsubishi Pajero SFX has received a refreshing facelift. The vehicle is assembled at HM's Thiruvallur (Tamil Nadu) plant, where it produces Mitsubishi's mid-size car Lancer. This third-generation Pajero is available globally with a 3.2L diesel, engine but in India it is powered by a 2.8L turbo-diesel engine. Adopting a 'One Country One Price' policy, Mitsubishi vehicles are priced the same throughout the length and breadth of the country. In India, the Pajero SFX is available in one variant.

The 2.8-litre, 8-valve, Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC), turbo-charged and intercooled diesel engine cranks out 117 bhp at 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 292 Nm at 2,000 rpm. This heady engine generates stupendous power to take the Pajero to a maximum speed of 150 km/h. The SUV clocks 0-100 kmph in just 17 seconds and returns 8/11 km/l (city/highway). The low-revving engine is mated with a 5-speed manual transmission to offer smooth shifts and also high as well as low gear ratios.

This off-road performer is constructed on a body-on-frame pattern that stands out in competition when it comes to tough roads. The front double wishbone setup with torsion plus stabilizer bar, and the rear 3-link coil spring and rigid axle with stabiliser bar arrangement is extremely efficient during off-road driving. The SUV is precisely tuned to provide stability and no body roll even at high speed. Pajero's body is exceptionally strong for rugged terrain and is efficient on highways.

New Mitsubishi Pajero Car - Interior

The Pajero has a body-on-ladder design; it has a tall stance with good ground clearance. The SUV's bulky body and bumpers give it a masculine look. Its silver-coloured bumper runs across the body like cladding and garnishes the door. The chromed handle, side mirrors and six-spoke alloy wheels add some gloss to the SUV. With dual-coloured interiors and body-coloured headrests, the interiors of the Pajero are sporty and practical. Especially built for off-road driving, the leather seats are well bolstered.

The four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel design is impressive unlike the instrument cluster, which has straight lines all over. To add more comfort, the first and the second row seats get unique hand-rests with cup holders. Ash trays have been installed on the door sides. Air vents are installed individually for all rows to maintain uniform temperature all over. The driver's seat is height adjustable with lumbar adjusters, the second row seats recline, and the second and the third row seats are fully foldable to make space for luggage.

The Pajero gets a standard music system with tuner and MP3 CD player. Some of the safety features on the Pajero include 3-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts, front and rear door impact bars, collapsible steering column, high-mount stop lamp and child-protection rear door locks.

New Mitsubishi Lancer Car - Exterior 9.6 / 14.9 km/l (city/highway), 1.5L I-4 Petrol
11.6 / 15.6 km/l (city/highway), 2.0L I-4 Diesel
1.5L, 86 bhp Inline-4 Petrol
2.0L, 67 bhp Inline-4 Diesel
5-speed Manual Transmission (MT) * Estimated values may differ under various conditions.

Solid build. Rally tested technology. Choice of a petrol or a diesel engine. Smooth transmission. Precise handling. Fuel economy.

The Mitsubishi brand, known for its excellent transmission and rally performance, tied up with the CK Birla Group Company -- Hindustan Motors -- to sell their 'hot cake' Lancer in India. The rally-proven engine technology is still the choice of many. Its tried-and-tested safety and transmission mechanisms have proved that Mitsubishi is a performer in its class. Inheriting its characteristics from the four world rally championship titles, the Lancer is everything that you always wanted your car to be.

The Lancer rolls out a 1.5 LXi BS 3 petrol and 2.0L Diesel LX BS 3 diesel variants. With its inspiring 5-speed manual gearbox sporting calibrated gear ratios and superior shift feel, Lancer offers unmatched drivability. Mitsubishi follows a unique price philosophy, "One country, one price." Pricing for all its variants is uniform across the country. Available in five hues namely Black Onyx, Simply Red, Liquid Green, Warm Silver and Scotia White, the Lancer is competitively priced. Able competitors for the Lancer are Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent and Tata Indigo.

The car is powered by a heady 1.5-litre petrol engine that returns 86 bhp at 5,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 132.3 Nm at 3,300 rpm. The car comes mated to an excellent 5-speed manual transmission. The gear ratio is tall and storms the vehicle in no time. This 1,468cc petrol engine is not only powerful and robust, but extremely smooth as well. It is an ideal mate for city drives and long cruises.

The 2.0-litre naturally aspirated diesel engine returns a decent 67 bhp and only 122.5 Nm of torque, but performs exceptionally well on road. Coupled with a tall gearbox, this diesel engine is easy to drive in the stop-and-go city traffic. It is also as silent as a petrol car, using the 'Super Silent Shaft Technology.'

The exhaust tone is convincingly churned out by the punchy gearbox. The car is well-balanced with its subtle suspension system (McPherson Strut with coil spring, gas-filled shock absorbers and stabilizer bar), which is a class by itself. The car does not lean much during tight cornering.

New Mitsubishi Lancer Car - Interior

The sedan-racer looks of the Lancer are enhanced by the rear bumper that features a diffuser undersurface in a distinctive design, and corners that are shaped to stabilise air flow detachment and reduce drag. An integral molding features the new front bumper that houses an oversize multi-slatted grille to raise engine cooling efficiency. Unwanted openings on the undersurface of the bumper have been closed off to reduce air resistance. Lancer's sharp lines and rolling curves set it in a class apart. In the exterior, a flowing symmetry noticeably balanced with geometric accents makes it an attention grabber.

The elegant grace of the interior invites you to step inside. The tilt adjustable power steering, electrically adjustable outside mirrors and the driver door mounted controls provide comfort to the driver.

The design philosophy behind the Cedia is to deliver a good car that has most of its work cut out on city roads as well as one that does well on occasional highway jaunts.

Under the hood, the Cedia features a 2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that outputs 115 bhp and a maximum torque of 175 Nm at peak. The race-bred engine incorporates ECI-MULTI (Electronically Controlled Multi-Point Fuel Injection) for extra torque that comes in handy at passing speeds and while powering out of a tight spot. On the ALPG variant, the petrol engine is fitted with an LPG kit that produces an output of 100 bhp and peak torque of 156.5 Nm. The 48-litre LPG tank is placed in the boot of the car and LPG flow is controlled by a 32-bit microprocessor. On full tanks (Petrol & LPG), the car can easily cover 1000 kms at a stretch. The LPG option is very cost effective and Cedia ALPG offers running costs as low as Rs 3 per kilometer.

Standard transmission is a 5-speed manual that delivers a power-packed and sporty performance; shifts are smooth and seamless, with the use of keyless synchronisers. The car can hit a top speed of 180 kmph and comes equipped with enhanced safety features that include dual air bags, 3-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts, collapsible steering column, an anti-lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution.

The Cedia has a minimum turning radius of just 4.9 metres, which makes it easy to navigate and maneuver around tight corners. The car delivers responsive steering, agile handling and excellent ride comfort, attributed in no mean measure to its rigid body design and the all-wheel independent suspension system. The tuned suspension incorporates McPherson Struts in the front and a multi-link system in the rear. Motoring enthusiasts will be thrilled by its energetic performance and sheer driving pleasure.

New Mitsubishi Cedia Car - Interior

As far as looks go, the Cedia makes quite an impression, both on the exterior fascia as well as inside. The car has good ergonomics, a plush cabin and enhanced passenger protection measures in place. Muscular styling on the fascia incorporates a front grille (with chrome accents for Spirit and Sports), slanting halogen headlamps (for Spirit and Sports), stylised front air dams, and side skirts. Clear lens tail lamps, a rear spoiler with stop lamp and a roof antenna bring up the rear. The Cedia wears six spoke alloy wheels in keeping with its sporty image.

The cabin is spacious, elegant and generously appointed with comfort features that include wood and titanium leather cockpit, power windows, power tilt steering, height adjustable driver seat, leather gear knob, sporty black upholstery, auto dimming cabin light, mirror controls, black door sash, boot access and chrome door handles. The raised hip-point of the seats allows for easy access into and out of the Cedia. Seats are comfortable, well-bolstered and can be adjusted for reclining; there is plenty of headroom and legroom too.

And finally the bells of wisdom have rung in Mitsubishi’s ears. The company that was never serious of the Indian market has finally decided to pull up its socks and get cracking!

Mitsubishi is planning to ramp up production in the emerging markets like India. It will do so by ceasing production of a couple of its North American models and use the resources to increase output in BRIC nations. The company aims to lift its global production to 1.5 million units (an approximate 50% increase) by this process of resource redistribution.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X

There are also rumors that the company plans to ditch the current JV with Hindustan Motors and establish a new one with Nissan for manufacturing small cars. This is certainly a good thing because last December, HM sold more Ambassadors (450 units) then all Mitsubishi products combined (198 units). Clearly, this JV is not heading anywhere.

But what can Mitsubishi really do to make it BIG in the 2nd fastest growing auto market in the world. Here are some suggestions:

1) Ramp up dealer Network:
Right now finding a Mitsubishi dealer is like finding a needle in the haystack. The situation NEEDS to improve

2) Get those aging models out:
The Pajero, Cedia and the Lancer are long dead. Time to chuck them out and get new models in. And NO stickering job please!

3) Bring in a Hatchback
You have 3 SUV’s and no hatchback; what sort of a product mix is that? You can’t possibly hope to capture eyeballs in the Indian market without having a hatch in your portfolio. And you have a fantastic hatch – The Colt under your sleeves, what’s stopping you from getting it to India?

4) Bring the Grandis
The MUV segment is expected to grow in the coming year and a slew of new launches are planned. Get the Grandis’s pricing right and you have an Innova Killer on your hands. There was a rumor of the MUV being launched in 2006, I am sure 4 years is enough to make up your mind.

5) Ramp up marketing activities
Right now, the consumer is probably not even aware that you have 6 products on sale. The EVO launch got you the ample eyeballs that you needed, time to follow it through. You probably are the most famous manufacturer in the Rally Circuit; convey that in your advertising. We love products that are tested to their extreme limits.

@Mitsubishi India: Monday is always a good day to start :D

Small is the new BIG.

Recently we got you a story of how Mitsubishi is planning to get aggressive in India and what needs to be done. One of the interesting points was to get a small car for the Indian market. Well our words have been heard instantaneously.

Mitsubishi Global Small Car

Mitsubishi has released renderings of a global small car that is expected to debut at Geneva in March 2011. The car is expected to have 1.0 to 1.2L engine mated to a CVT gearbox and will make it to the showroom floors by 2012. The global small car is also expected to have some fuel saving wizardry and regenerative breaking.

The front of the car for some odd reason looks like a re-skinned Nissan Micra. Doesn’t that speak volumes about Mitsubishi’s expansion plans? :)

Mitsubishi Motors Lineup at the 2011 Geneva International Motor Show

Tokyo, January 18, 2011 – Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will give the global premiere of the MITSUBISHI Concept Global Small (show model), a concept car based on the features of “compact”, “affordability”, and “high fuel efficiency” at the 81st Geneva International Motor Show which runs from March 1 through March 13 at the Geneva Palexpo exhibition and conference complex (opening to the general public on March 3).

MMC will display a total of 12 vehicles (6 during public days), including vehicles already on sale in Europe, in addition to the 100% electric i-MiEV, of which about 2,500 units have already been shipped to Europe within three months since its start of production and shipment in October 2010.

The MITSUBISHI Concept Global Small is the concept model of the compact passenger vehicle that is planned for production in March of 2012 at the MMC’s new third factory in Thailand.

The features of the MITSUBISHI Concept Global Small include good maneuverability and easy operation, an inherent of a compact car, accomplished in to a highly efficient package that can comfortably seat five adults. In addition, the MITSUBISHI Concept Global Small achieves top-of-class fuel efficiency, with CO2 emissions in the mid-90g/km range due to:
• Usage of an idling stop mechanism
• A 1.0 – 1.2L class compact engine equipped with a regenerative braking system
• Weight trimming to the most complex parts
• Reduced running resistance in the engine, new-generation CVT, brakes, and tires
• A body shape that greatly reduces aerodynamic resistance.

20 January, 2011 Just before its premier at the upcoming 81st Geneva International Motor Show, Mitsubishi Motors has revealed its ‘MITSUBISHI Concept Global Small’ (show model). The car is scheduled to roll-off the company‘s assembly plant in Thailand in March 2012. The Japanese carmaker claims that the car is capable of carrying five people while achieving high fuel efficiency along with low CO2 emissions in the mid-90g/m range.
Other details that the company has revealed are a start/stop mechanism and 1.0 and 1.2 litre engine that powers the car. Another attractive feature is regenerative braking system. In order to enhance the fuel efficiency of the car, and minimize CO2 emissions of the car, the company will use light-weight parts and an aerodynamic exterior.
The car is expected to reach the Indian market too, since it is going to be manufactured in Thailand. In fact, if that happens, Mitsubishi can attempt to regain its lost market share since most of its vehicles appeal to a high-profile enthusiast category where numbers are hard to generate. The small car segment on the other hand is one of the fastest growing in the world and the growth trend is expected to continue for a good time.
