03 February, 2012 French auto major Renault on Thursday said it is planning to launch a passenger car in India at below Rs 4 lakh.
“Beyond Rs 4 lakh a car is our playing ground today (in India). We project to go below Rs 4 lakh,” Renault India Pvt Ltd country managing director Marc Nassif said here. He was speaking on the sidelines of a programme to launch Pulse, a hatchback in B segment.
According to Nassif, currently about 50 percent of Indian passenger cars cost between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 4 lakh. The company launched the diesel version of Pulse, priced between Rs 5.77 lakh and Rs 6.25 lakh, in January.
Nassif said the plan of rolling out cars below Rs 4 lakh was part of its global strategy.
On the sales target in India, he said: “We will aim to sell one lakh cars once we have our five cars on the roads and 100 outlets. It can be 2013 or 2014... that will depend on how the models are doing and the growth of the market.”
Among the company's five new cars, three are out in the market.
The car maker, which entered India in 2005, launched a luxury sedan, Fluence, in May 2010. In September, it came up with a compact SUV, Koleos.
In the second half of this year, it will launch Duster, a SUV. The company will come out with a sedan before 2012 ends. “Last year (2011) we sold about 1,500 cars (Koleos and Fluence),” Nassif said.
The company will open 100 outlets in the country by December 2012.

* Estimated values may differ under various conditions.

Renault has used high end F1 technology to produce everyday cars. Four electrically adjustable windows. Plenty of headroom and leg room. Start/stop engine switch. Automatically folding mirrors when the car is locked. Climate control.

The Renault-Nissan alliance has launched Renault Pulse, their compact hatchback, customized for the Indian markets. The car, built to set the Indian customers’ pulse racing, has been built on the Nissan Micra platform. Renault currently sells two distinct models in India, the Fluence sedan and the Koleos. The Pulse hatchback is the third model to debut across India at the time of the Auto Expo and will be followed by the Dacia or Duster model. The French carmaker has chalked out a strategy to launch five distinctly different models in a time span of 15 months. Renault has cleverly linked its strong and successful F1 story to its regular cars, having the Pulse unveiled in India on Oct 29th 2011 in Noida by Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing along with other officials of the company.

The Renault Pulse has been targeted exclusively at the Indian market and has been designed at the Design Center of Renault India in Mumbai and produced at its plant in Chennai. The plant complies with the Alliance quality standards and the production management system which is based on mutual knowledge-sharing and best practices of both Renault and Nissan. The compact car is all set to storm the market with its bold and sporty design, fuel efficiency, dynamic driving experience and smart features along with the Renault Complete Car offer or warranty for a four-year time frame. Renault Pulse, has been launched on 6th January 2012, is available in six vibrant colours. The car almost resembles the Nissan Micra, be it exteriors or interiors.

The Renault Pulse features a fuel efficient 1.5 dCi diesel engine, internally designated as the k9k, which has been a major hit not just in India but in many countries across the world. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Renault has succeeded in transferring high end F1 technology of producing everyday cars with class and fuel efficiency. This is the very same engine doing duty in the Nissan Micra. The engine is manufactured at the plant of the company at Orangadam, near Chennai. The capacity of the plant is slated to be scaled up from 1,40,000 units per annum by 3,00,000 units. Renault also plans to launch a petrol variant with a 1.2 litre, 3-cylinder engine.

The K9k, designed on the same principles as the RS27 engine, has been developed by the Renault Sport F1 team to produce a maximum power of 63 bhp @4000 rpm. Maximum torque of 160 Nm is produced at 2000 rpm. The Renault Pulse returns with an amazing mileage. The mileage of the car works out to 23.08 kmpl overall, making it an ideal companion for daily driving needs.

New Renault Pulse Car - Interior

Renault Pulse is best described as a sporty mid-sized hatchback which has been built on the Nissan Micra platform with a few distinctive changes. The exteriors of the car looks appealing enough to turn heads while the beige fabric interiors are comfortable enough to make one relax and want to spend a whole lot of time inside the car itself. The Pulse features a completely revised front and rear end style. Renault has introduced striking changes at the front end of the car giving it a totally butched appearance. You get a different grille with a black slat running across it, 15-inch alloy wheels, Bridgestone tyres and a honeycomb-mesh. The wedge shaped headlights seem to be adapted from the Fluence and the Koleos. The internal elements seem to be inspired by the Hyundai i10. The rear portion of the car has taillights similar to that of the Micra. If not for the Renault monogram on the boot lid, it would be very easy to confuse the car for the Micra. The Pulse has been designed with a smart look with the target customer being young and the fun loving people who go for drives without compromising on the fuel efficiency.

The interior of the hatchback is strikingly similar to those in the Micra, with the same curvaceous design, round audio system, bow-hook door handles, chrome internal door handles and diamond logo on the steering wheel. The Renault Pulse is loaded with many comfort features including plenty of headroom and leg room in the front and the back seats, power steering, keyless entry, rear cup holder, four electrically adjustable windows, start/stop engine switch and automatically folding mirrors when the car is locked. The comfort features of the car include a centrally placed music system and retro styled control knobs. The big O type display for the air conditioner with climate control does not fail to impress. The rear seats look similar to that in the recently tweaked Micra, with an extra thigh support. The high end model of the car, likely to be the RxV variant, will feature adjustable headrests too.

The Renault Pulse reflects the Renault DNA of safety, quality and innovation, combining the luxuries of a bigger sedan with the economy of a small compact car. Renault Pulse is big on safety. The safety features that the Pulse can boast of includes Driver and passenger airbags, anti-pinch safety function on driver side window, Child proof rear door locks, Front Fog lamps, Immobilizer, Head restraints-Front & Rear, High Mounted Stop Lamp and Speed Sensing Auto Door Lock amongst many other safety features.

03 November, 2011 French carmaker Renault is planning to follow the footsteps of rivals like Hyundai, Toyota, Suzuki and Honda to develop an all new car platform solely for India as the company tries to push sales in one of the world’s high-potential market.
Carlos Tavares, the global chief operating officer of Renault, said the company was working out “all options” to give a push to its India plans. “India is one of the key markets for us along with Brazil and Russia,” Tavares said after unveiling the company’s first small car, Pulse, which shares platform with Japanese partner Nissan’s V-platform.
Nissan already sells its Micra small car based on the same platform. “It could happen that we develop a new platform for this market. All possibilities are open.”
A car built for India and its specific requirements is seen as crucial to break into the market. Models specifically developed for the Indian market include Toyota’s Etios sedan and Liva hatchback, Honda’s Brio and Hyundai’s Eon. Suzuki’s Indian subsidiary Maruti is also developing a new car “from scratch” that is expected to hit the roads next year.
Renault has been trying to give a thrust to its India plans ever since its partnership with Mahindra & Mahindra ended in a divorce after their joint product Logan failed to take off. The company currently sells the Fluence sedan and Koleos sport-utility vehicle in India and plans to introduce another SUV, Duster, by mid-2012.
The Pulse will be the third car from the company and will be launched around January next year. However, its commonality with the Nissan Micra raises doubt over any blockbuster success, considering that Micra has not been able to make any major impact.

29 September, 2011 French carmaker Renault has lined up a marketing spend of Rs 6.5 crore during the F1 Grand Prix, scheduled to be held in Greater Noida near Delhi from October 28.
“We have a lot of events around the F1 GP. Apart from the engines on the cars, we will display an F1 car, hold events at malls using race simulators so that winners get invites to the GP,” said Len Curran, vice-president, sales and marketing, Renault India. He added that the company had prepared campaigns with Yahoo and animation at its showrooms, where tickets can be won. The company’s chairman, Carlos Ghosn, will unveil during the event the concept version of its hatchback that it plans to launch in the country in the first quarter of 2012.
Curran was in Pune for the unveiling of the Koleos sports utility vehicle. Customers could soon face a waiting list for the Koleos, he said, should the orders continue at the same rate in October as in the first month of the vehicle's launch.
Renault, which has announced a five-car roll out by December 2012, will bring in the mini SUV, the Duster, by the first half of next year. “This will be a heavily Indianised car, not like the Dacia Duster that you see in Europe,” Curran said.
The firm has sold 700 units of the luxury sedan Fluence since its launch in May, with the diesel variant accounting for 80 percent of sales. Meanwhile, Renault has begun sales in Europe of its Twizzy, a coupe which has largely been designed at its Mumbai engineering design centre.

20 September, 2011 French car-maker Renault on Monday launched its premium SUV Koleos and said it will launch its small car and two other new models in the domestic market by early next year.
The two-litre, 4x4 diesel Koleos comes at Rs 24.1 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai).
“We will launch our small car in India by next January. Besides, we will also launch an SUV and a mid-segment sedan in the same year,” Renault India Sales & Marketing Vice President Len Curran told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of the Koleos.
The French car major, which came to the country through a tie-up with the Mahindras earlier had exited from the JV in April 2010, and made its solo debut in the domestic market with the premium sedan Fluence in May.
The launch of the Koleos is a step forward in Renault India’s plans to introduce five cars here by the end of 2012, Curran said.
The Koleos made its international debut in 2008 and this is the first face-lift the vehicle has received since its launch, and being sold across five continents.
“The new Koleos made its world debut last week at the Frankfurt Motor Show. We are highly optimistic about the product and we are confident it will cater to the needs of all the customers who are looking for a premium SUV, which combines both style and dynamic abilities,” Curran said.
Curran also said the company will launch a mini SUV, the Duster by May-June next year and a mid-size sedan by next year-end. By 2015, Renault is hoping to be among the top three brands, he said.
Curran said that the company’s strategy for India is to first consolidate position in the premium segment and then to go in for volumes. Renault has also plans to expand its dealership network to 40 from the existing 14 by this December, he said adding by December 2012, “we aim to have 100 dealerships”.
Going by the enquiries and on-going festival season, we are confident of selling a good number of the Koleos.

22 June, 2011 French carmaker Renault on Tuesday said it will launch a new hatchback in India during the Auto Expo in January 2012 that will compete with Maruti Suzuki’s Swift. The car is specifically designed for the Indian market by its design centre in Mumbai.
The French car major said that the next launch will be the Koleos SUV. It will be unveiled in the next few days. The French car maker announced this at an event where it disclosed its product plans and handed over the keys to the first 14 customers.
“In January 2012 we will launch a hatchback in B to B+ segment and it is specifically designed for the Indian customers by our Mumbai centre,” Renault Executive Vice President (Product Planning and Program) Philippe Klein told reporters.
The company will launch the car in segment where Maruti Suzuki India’s premium hatchback Swift is positioned. Klein said the company will launch its sports utility vehicle new Koleos by the end of 2011. Renault said that India will be among the first countries to see the Koleos going on sale. “After the hatchback, our fourth car for the Indian market will be a SUV and its the Duster. We will launch it in the second half of 2012,” Klein said.
The company has already launched its luxury sedan Fluence in India this year. The company had earlier announced to launch five vehicles in India by the end of 2012. All the cars will be assembled at Renault’s Indian facility in Chennai, Klein said.
With a committed investment of Rs 4500 crore by 2015 the alliance plant in Chennai is now fully operational with one assembly line and the second line will be installed by mid-2011 taking the capacity to 4,00,000 cars per year.
According to the company officials, the plant is of flexible type, producing vehicles from both Nissan and Renault on a single line. Renault also plans to set-up a powertrain assembly line in the near future.
Renault and Japanese car maker Nissan joined hands in 2008 to set up a manufacturing facility at Oragadam. While the first hatchback “Micra” was rolled out from Nissan’s stable last year, the flagship luxury sedan “Fluence” from Renault was launched as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit this year.

23 June, 2011 Europe’s second largest car maker Renault on Tuesday said its proposed ultra low cost (ULC) car with Bajaj Auto for the Indian market has the least priority till 2012, the year scheduled for its launch.
The Indian two-wheeler maker, who is planning a foray into the passenger car segment with the ULC, has not even shown the prototype of the product yet to its Franco-Japanese alliance Renault-Nissan despite getting requests for the same several times.
“As we have announced earlier, five cars are going to be launched by 2012. They are the priority and there is no ULC in this,” Renault India Managing Director Marc Nassif told reporters.
When asked if the ULC is not a priority for the company’s Indian operations, he said: “We cannot comment anything on the (ULC) project at this time as we have not seen the product... Our focus is the five Renault cars.”
The company, which aims to sell 90,000 to one lakh cars in India by 2013, said it will take a decision on the ULC once the product is available to them for review and it “may be an opportunity for us”, he added. Bajaj Auto, however, has not shown the product yet to its partners despite stating several times earlier that it is on track to launch a commercial vehicle from the same platform.
“We have been asking them to show the prototype many times. But they are saying wait and wait,” Renault Executive Vice President and Leader of Asia Africa Management Katsumi Nakamura said.
Identifying India as one of its three key global markets after Brazil and Russia, Renault said affordable cars will play an important role and products that will be launched here between 2013 and 2015 will be mainly in the mass market.
“The biggest part of the Indian market is below the five products, which we will be launching by 2012. So it is obvious that with our target in mind, other future products will be towards the affordable range,” Renault Executive Vice President (Sales and Marketing) Jerome Stoll said.
Yet, the Renault officials declined to comment on the role that the ULC with Bajaj would play in future. Last month, Nassif had said the company would go ahead with the ULC car only if it is satisfied with the quality of the product.

Mahindra Logan CNGRenault SA has reported that it will not re-introduce Logan when it launches its own range of products from Mid-2011. The French automaker will end the licensing agreement with Mahindra & Mahindra within three months from now. The existing Logo carrying Renault tag will be withdrawn from the product.

According to reports, car, sold under the Mahindra-Renault badge, will see a re-branding exercise and be manufactured and distributed by M&M alone. The engines and transmissions for the Logan, however, would continue to be supplied by Renault. Mahindra has the rights to execute minor changes in the vehicle. Since the IPR for the Logan rests with Renault, company may provide the technology to upgrade the Logan in the future.

New Logan CS Spy PictureAs we already reported earlier, Mahindra is almost developed the cut-down version of Logan to be launched in India. This will help Mahindra to avail discounts which is eligible with a body length of less than 4-meters and will also help to price the car very aggressively.

Renault has firmed plans to introduce five cars in the Indian market over the next two years, including the sedan Fluence, sports utility vehicle Koleos and a premium hatchback. Automaker is eying a 5% share of the Indian market by 2014, adds report.
