09 November, 2011 Workers at Maruti Suzuki’s plant supplying engines for its best-selling models have deliberately slowed production to protest unsatisfactory resolution to the recent labour unrest, spelling further trouble for the country’s biggest carmaker.
Output has dropped to 60 percent at the company’s vendor Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd (SPIL), which is its sole supplier of diesel engines, since the 13-day strike ended on October 19. This means a further delay in delivery of models such as the diesel-driven Suzuki hatchback and the midsized Suzuki Dzire, the backlog for which already stretches over nine months.
The SPIL workers are peeved at the management’s failure to reinstate their three union functionaries and arrive at a final settlement to their due wage revision. SPIL is owned 70 percent by Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp and the rest by Maruti Suzuki India.
“There have been no proactive steps from the SPIL management to speedily address workers’ issues and sort out the matter at the earliest,” Subey Singh Yadav, president of the workers’ union said.
Yadav said the pending inquiry against him and two of his colleagues is unlikely to foster trust between the management and the workers. “It’s a management-led process. Much cannot be expected in terms of transparency or impartial inquiry,” he said. The SPIL management refused to comment.
The workers say they had initially planned to continue their strike on demands of immediate reinstatement of Yadav and the others, but were swayed by management’s assurances of a lenient action. “All workers stand by the basic demand of getting back all their leaders.
The SPIL management has been apprised of the situation to settle all pending issues at the earliest,” Netra Pal Singh, who assembles engines on SPIL’s shop floor said, refusing to rule out strikes in future.
The workers at SPIL do not foresee a situation similar to Maruti Suzuki’s car plant in Manesar, where the entire team of 30 workers resigned and took severance package of at least Rs 16 lakh each last week.
The workers at the Manesar car plant had adopted a similar go-slow policy which led to a sharp decline in production to almost half, which prompted the company to enforce the Good Conduct Bond that led to the 33-day strike.
SPIL, with an annual capacity of three lakh engines and transmission, is critical to Maruti Suzuki because frequent petrol price hikes have led to a steep increase in demand for diesel-driven cars.

hyundai small car hb Hyundai Motors Plans To Open New Diesel Engine PlantHyundai Motors India is mulling a new plant in India and planned to spend Rs 400 crore to build the 1.5-lakh diesel engine plant. The company’s new plant location is not yet finalised.
“While we are channelising more production to India and cutting down exports, the new diesel engines would be fitted into our existing and future cars as local customers are gradually preferring diesel over petrol ,” said HW Park, MD, Hyundai Motor India.
Hyundai Motor is planning for the new plant to meet the growing demand and wait for the final acceptance from the parent company.
“We have witnessed 24% growth in the Indian market even as exports at 2.47 lakh cars were down by 8.5% in 2010 calendar year,” Hyundai’s director (marketing & sales) Arvind Saxena said.
The company will also roll out a new small car below the Santro model from the Chennai plant. “The small car will be the smallest model from Hyundai’s global line-up and India would be one of its lead markets,” Mr. Park said.

28 December, 2010 Hyundai Motor India is planning to set up a Greenfield plant. The South Korean company will spend Rs 400 crore to build the 1.5 lakh diesel engine plant, hoping to cater to the rising requirements from domestic market. The company is yet to decide on the location of the plant. Hyundai’s two car manufacturing plants are located in Chennai.
“While we are channelizing more production to India and cutting down exports, the new diesel engines would be fitted into our existing and future cars as local customers are gradually preferring diesel over petrol ,” said HW Park, MD, Hyundai Motor India.
Hyundai sells diesel models of its i20 hatchback and other bigger cars and imports the engines from South Korea. It is also looking for a third car plant in India to meet the growing demand and is awaiting final nod from the parent company.
Hyundai has already increased the allocation to the domestic market to 65% for calendar year 2011, up from the 3.56 lakh cars it sold in India, aggregating 60% of its total year production. And the company also plans to bring a car smaller than the Santro.
“We have witnessed 24% growth in the Indian market even as exports at 2.47 lakh cars were down by 8.5% in 2010 calendar year,” Hyundai’s director (marketing & sales) Arvind Saxena said.
“The small car will be the smallest model from Hyundai's global line-up and India would be one of its lead markets,” Mr Park said.

CNBC TV-18 is reporting that Maruti Suzuki is set to launch its Kizashi luxury saloon into the Indian car market on the 28th of next month. The Kizashi is Suzuki’s first luxury saloon and will be Maruti Suzuki’s first ever offering in the entry level luxury saloon space.

The Kizashi will be launched with both manual and automatic transmission options, But there’s a twist. Contrary to earlier reports, Deccan Herald claims the Kizashi will not feature the 2.4-liter, inline-four, petrol powerplant pumping out 185 bhp of power and 230 Nm of torque.

It instead will be powered using a 2.0-liter petrol engine with slightly less power and torque.

Due to reasons of cost, the Indian Kizashi is most likely to be offered only in Front Wheel Drive (FWD) guise, unlike international markets where an All Wheel Drive (AWD) version is also offered. Maruti Suzuki could launch the AWD version of the Kizashi at a later date, to take on the mighty Skoda Superb 3.6 V6 AWD.

Considering the rivals (Skoda Superb, Honda Accord) awaiting the Kizashi once its launched, Maruti is considering pricing the Kizashi a bit aggressively in the 18-20 lakh price bracket, which will place the Kizashi smack bang in Skoda Superb territory. Such pricing could also give the Kizashi a leg up on its other rival, the Honda Accord.

But, will the weight of the Maruti brand rein in the Kizashi from setting sales charts on fire or will it propel it to the top of the leader board? Only time will tell.

When it comes to automotive problems, diagnosing and addressing them early on can save you a lot of money. Ignoring a car problem will only aggravate the situation and repair bills. In this article, we will discuss in detail top five engine problems. Lets put some light on the signs of engine trouble, and what to do in such situations. When we put the key in the vehicle's ignition cylinder, we hardly pay any attention. It is not until one or more of the dashboard warning lights start flashing that we start to give them a serious thought. These lights are connected with sensors that monitor a number of systems in your car. When a cars engine is concerned, these lights provide an early warning system indicating some or the other problem.

The "Check Engine" light is one of the most troubling lights, mostly because it could mean a lot of things. The easiest way to find out what the light is trying to tell you is to hook your vehicle up to a scan tool. This tool looks a little like a large calculator and plugs into a connection port inside the car. This scanner communicates with the cars systems to find out what exactly has been prompting the light to blink.

We are aware that most of the people in India do not have this tool. So the easiest and the most sensible thing to do is to take your car to a service station, who use a similar kind of scanning tool to diagnose the problem.

In a normal condition, your car should deliver a rather smooth drive which is free of surges, jerking, hesitation or stalls. But in case it does not, it is a signal of an upcoming or in the process engine trouble. Such a behavior from your car is a clue to fouled spark plugs, clogged fuel lines or fuel filter, a faulty computerized driving profile being read by the engine computer, or other issues.

Obviously, you cannot allow your vehicle to take its own sweet time to accelerate or give out completely. Similarly, if your car revs up at idle or accelerates out of the blue, it is time you took your car to a qualified technician and got your car investigated as soon as possible. Preventive car maintenance measures, such as regular oil changes and belt replacements, can help you keep your car in the best shape.

It is normal for a car to have a little bit of noise coming from under the hood. But pops and other irregular noises coming out from the engine compartment are danger signs. A tapping or popping may indicate some detonation happening within the engines cylinders. Usually this happens when the fuel ignites prematurely in the combustion chamber of the cylinders. This can possibly result in piston damage that would make your wallet lighter.

A grinding noise while starting the car can mean that your starter motor is up for adjustment or possible replacement. A grinding or clunking noise during gear change means that you need to take your car to a service station as soon as possible.

In some cases, a little bit of noise such as a mild ticking or clicking may be normal. For example, fuel injected vehicles make slight audible clicks from the injectors. But, it is always recommended to seek professional advice when in doubt.

If you smell some odd automotive odors inside the passenger compartment of your car, you can be sure of it being a strong sign of potential engine trouble. These odors may indicate oil or coolant leakage from their normally closed-loop systems, or it may also mean that dangerous exhaust gases are invading into your car's interior.

Vehicle exhaust contains toxic gases such as carbon monoxide. So, if you get a strong smell of exhaust inside your car, get it checked immediately.

Similarly, a smell of burning rubber could indicate towards damaged drive belts or accessory belts beneath the hood, or improperly tensioned or just worn out. Additionally, it could also mean that a rubber pipe carrying important fluids is touching something hot that it shouldnt. When you come across these odors inside your car, it is best to take action sooner rather than later. With all of these potential problems, it's a good idea to act sooner rather than later, as they could be linked to a much more crucial and expensive component.

Exhaust smokes can tell you hundred of things about your cars engine. If you notice excessive smoke, or excessive amounts of steam, there might be engine problems. In such situations, it is advised that you take the car for a check-up, as these situations never fix by themselves. Smoke coming out of the tailpipe may indicate contamination in the fuel-air mixture. It is annoying and dangerous for the other motorists on the road; additionally it can also lead to gasket failure beneath the hood.

Usually, blue smoke from the tailpipe means that oil is escaping from its passageway within the engine, and is being burned along with the fuel. The smartest thing to do in this situation is to take the car to a mechanic and get the worn damaged seals repaired. White smoke from the tailpipe means the water condensation or antifreeze has mixed with the fuel supply.
