13 April, 2011 Car maker Nissan Motor India said it has hiked prices of its small car Micra by up to Rs 11,170 with immediate effect to offset the pressure of rising input costs.
“The hike will be applicable to both petrol and diesel versions and will be in the range of Rs 2,500 (0.5 per cent) to Rs 11,170 (2 per cent),” the company said in a statement.
The existing ex-showroom, Delhi, prices of the petrol version of Micra varies between Rs 4.06 lakh and Rs 4.36 lakh, while the diesel car is available for Rs 5.59 lakh-Rs 6.05 lakh.
The company, however, did not raise the prices of its imported models such as sports utility vehicle X-Trail, luxury sedan Teana and sports car 370Z, it added.
Commenting on the development, Nissan Motor India Managing Director and CEO Kiminobu Tokuyama said: “There has been a steady increase in the input cost over a period of time. It has come to a situation now that the price hike is inevitable and we have decided to increase the price of Micra.”
In this month, many auto makers have raised the prices of their products on account of rising commodity rates. The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India increased prices of its vehicles across all models between Rs 1,100 to Rs 9,000 for similar reasons.
Homegrown auto major Mahindra and Mahindra raised prices of its entire range of vehicles by up to Rs 15,000. Tata Motors has also hiked prices of its passenger vehicles by up to Rs 36,000 from April 1.
Another big car maker Hyundai Motor India is also mulling taking a similar step.

Nissan working on small car below Micra

Unable to price the Micra aggressively, Nissan has understood that the only way to penetrate the Indian market is by developing another inexpensive compact car.
Nissan is working on this small car and the Indian wing is helping them complete the task. Earlier this year, Nissan held talks with Ashok Leyland for a car between the Bajaj-Nissan-Renault ULC and the Micra, but no headway was made.
As wheelosphere.org points out, Nissan could develop this mini car with another objective – Pixo replacement for Europe. The Pixo is the Maruti Suzuki A-Star wearing a Nissan badge. Maruti Suzuki agreed to supply Nissan Pixos till 2013. Beyond this point, Nissan might fill that void by manufacturing the next generation Pixo at its Oragadam plant in Chennai where the Micra is manufactured.
Mr. Kiminobu Tokuyama, Managing Director & CEO, Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd. (NMIPL) to Business Standard -
We plan to have a car below the Micra. We have a significant demand for this segment and we have been studying it. We are, at present, in the concept stage and studying customers
Rumor has it that Volkswagen expressed interest in cosmetically altering the A-Star to fill the product gap under the Polo for India. This might be another reason why Nissan could have chosen to look beyond the A-Star and its partnership with Maruti Suzuki for the future of the Pixo. Recently there were reports of a possible tie-up between Malaysian car maker Proton and Nissan, where the latter would provide its V-Platform to Proton for developing its small car for India.
In 2013, Nissan will manufacture the V-Platform MPV at Oragadam which might not be suited for the Indian market. Nissan will however introduce the NV200 MPV in India by 2012 under the Ashok Leyland-Nissan alliance.
Nissan’s third product for India, from Oragadam, instead of the V-platform MPV, could be the sub-Micra mini car which will serve dual purpose – take on the likes of the Maruti Alto and Hyundai HA here in India, and serve as the Pixo replacement in Europe and other parts of the world.

Nissan Motor India is currently aligning its Micra hatch to price the car well compared to its rivals. The company’s cost engineers visited India to hold discussions with vendors to cut costs of its components. The team was led by Takeshi Kawai of the cost engineering department of Nissan Motors.
“The last six months has witnessed several new car launches. Nissan is an important player in the market and realises that cost advantage could make the difference, said by an industry source.
The company is currently looking for various possibilities to cut cost and decrease the base price and increase the chances to sell well in India without compromising quality.
Nissan Micra is being produced at the Chennai facility which the company shares with its French JV partner Renault. The company is planning to export Micra to nearly 100 countries including Europe and parts of Africa.

The Nissan Micra drives very well
Posted by Black Hat | 01:43 | cars, drives, Micra, Nissan | 0 comments »
The first thing that comes to mind while talking about diesel hatchbacks is turbo lag. It is the inborn characteristic of a diesel engine to wake up after a particular RPM and then rush to work. People who buy a diesel car have to put up with it, or somehow, alter their driving style to work around it.
Though it is not correct to say that the Micra diesel suffers not from the turbo lag phenomenon, it is precise to say the well-mated gearbox almost entirely fixes this problem. The acceleration is consistent for a diesel engine, right from 1,000 RPM to till about 3,500 RPM. If you need to accelerate more, up shift and load the engine to come back into the torque band.
The noise levels gain strength as you accelerate but at no time is it unbearable. On cold winter mornings, the Micra responds to power with a slightly annoying diesel clatter. Once the engine is up to temperature, it responds normally and is ready to impress.
There aren’t many diesel engines in India in cars costing 7 lakh rupees that impress as much as the Micra does. Producing only 64PS power and 160Nm torque, you’ll wonder where the remaining went from the voluminous 1,461cc engine. The reason behind cutting back power and torque is to avail extra fuel economy, which the long-distance traveler and diesel car buyer eagerly anticipates.
Not boasting of class-leading performance figures on paper, you’d expect the Micra to be a damp and grumpy car. But it is quite the opposite. For a car tipping the scales at 1,008 kg, it has enough grunt to provide you with a very lively driving experience. In gear acceleration is extremely good, overtaking is no trouble at all. The engine is very much single-minded and at no point during our drive did we feel anything in the engine compartment needed work or adjustment. If you are an eager up-shifter, you will find the car comfortably cruising at 25kph in third gear. That’s usually comfortable only in a petrol car. No one is going to complain about the car’s pickup once they have driven it. We haven’t driven a diesel hatch that provides such an engaging experience.
The brakes are very strong and you don’t have to pump them repeatedly to come to a halt. They are very responsive and during panic stops, one has, and very crucially, the confidence to negotiate the situation. It is very easy for the manufacturer to plonk a powerful motor and forget to fit suitable brakes. There is no ABS or EBD, but surprisingly we never missed them during the drive. Another area, then, where the Micra scores full marks.
The Micra’s suspension is setup to tackle speed bumps and pot holes, plenty in number since the monsoons have arrived in Chennai. We did not scrape one protrusion on the road. The bumps are absorbed well, though at higher speeds, like in any other small hatch, this doesn’t hold good.
There is a hint of body roll while you are accelerating through corners. There is no alarming shift in mass but reinforcement to the suspension can be considered to drown this problem. The tires provide good road grip, but noise dampening could have been better.

We’ve already seen how good a car the Micra diesel is, it’s practical and has useful features that makes it a value for about 7 lakh rupees.
But there are a few things that cannot be overlooked. Some of these are minor irritants, while a couple of them compromises safety.
Floor mat issue
While driving back from work last evening, I came across a very grave issue. The translucent rubber floor mat placed on the driver side fouls with the clutch pedal. Since it isn’t fastened at both ends to the floor, while applying the clutch, it collects the mat and at one point, part of the mat covered a decent area under the brake. Since the mat is elastic, it generates a certain amount of play and the brake peformance suffers from this. Nissan has to address this issue immediately by either pinning the mat or replacing it with one that covers the entire surface.
I was able to defeat this trouble maker by rolling the mat and pushing it under the driver’s seat. Notice the short dead pedal that will serve during highway runs.
Accelerator-brake pedal distance
Since the distance between the accelerator and brake pedal is short and as the brake pedal is placed slightly higher, people wearing large footwear will need to be careful. I found my foot stuck between the two many times while driving yesterday and I addressed it by wearing a more leg-hugging pair of shoes this morning. If you take your Nissan out for your morning jog wearing generous sports shoes or large sandals, you have to place your right foot at an angle so that your legs don’t get stuck between the pedals. Nissan must try and replicate the condition I’m talking about to understand this problem better.
Gear lever inconsistency
The gear lever operation at times has some ambiguity. While shifting through gears, some kind of a disturbance is felt. Something prevents the lever from moving about. This is very intermittent. When it’s good, it’s really good, but when it’s bad, it causes irritation. The bottom-left motion for reversing is simple and appreciated but it needed more than one attempt, on several occasions, to slot it in correctly.
Inadequate Glove box
The second glove box is sorely missed. If Nissan had an airbag in place, I could have overlooked this shortage. Since the glove box provided sits low and offers very little space, Nissan should have put in the second glove box.
Wiper operation
The wipers stalks took time getting used to. As it started raining immediately after I went out for a drive, I couldn’t fully understand how the wipers worked and getting distracted in traffic can sometimes mean trouble. Since this model has both front and rear wipers, I advise people get used to the operation and speed control before setting off.
Simple features went missing
Nissan has left out features like vanity mirror and height-adjustable rear head rests. While the vanity mirror will be missed by the ladies.
The height-adjustable rear head rest will be missed by taller people. Nissan stated at the launch that the diesel model is for the long distance customer. If customers are traveling long distances, many do so with more than one person in the car. At some point, there is a possibility of a tall person in the back. Take note of the high-utility parcel tray. It is suitable for tall items.
USB port for playing songs from a pen drive is another very useful feature that’s missing.
How can they make this an even sweeter deal?
If Nissan needs to do more justice to their marketing campaign, features like Bluetooth connectivity, automatic transmission, electrically operated seats and even satellite navigation are relevant additions for driving simpler. These can be provided on the top-end model, some even as options.
