19 October, 2011 Maruti Suzuki has begun production of its best-selling ‘Swift’ hatchback from its strike-crippled Manesar plant in Haryana, the company said on Tuesday. The carmaker rolled out 350 units of ‘Swift’ from the plant that was shut for 10 days following a sit-in protest by employees demanding reinstatement of 1,100 casual workers. Workers had started moving out of the factory on Friday following a court order, which enabled Maruti to resume partial production at the plant on Monday.
“The entire focus is to get the production normalised. We have over one lakh Swift customers waiting and we want to deliver the cars as soon as possible,” a company official said. Between the Gurgaon and the Manesar plants, the company produced 480 Swift cars on Tuesday.
The Gurgaon plants were able to raise output by 50 units to 1,750 vehicles, against its capacity of 2,800 cars a day. Production at the plants was affected due restricted supply of diesel engines and transmission from Suzuki Powertrain India, an affiliate.
Three strikes at carmaker since June have cost it a production loss of about 60,000 cars. The company held two more rounds of talks with the agitating workers on Tuesday. “There was a round of meeting in the morning and one in the evening. There are positive signs from the negotiations, but it”s too early to comment which way the talks end,’ people close to the development said.
The company has a booking order of over 110,000 Swift cars. Low production has pushed its waiting period to five to six months.
On Tuesday, Maruti strengthened the workforce at its Manesar plant to 400 and said it had repaired and made operational the weld and press shops it claimed were damaged by workers. Partial production has also started at Suzuki Powertrain, whose employees had joined the stir in support.
The carmaker produces its ‘Swift’ and A-Star hatchbacks and the SX4 sedan at Manesar, while its Gurgaon plants bring out the Alto, Swift DZire, Wagon-R, Eeco and Ritz models.
People close to the development said Suzuki Powertrain has started hiring fresh workforce to ramp up supplies to Maruti. The company’s board has sought a report on the labour unrest and will review its findings at a meeting later this month.

08 July, 2011 Maruti has stopped the production of its highly selling premium hatchback Swift. This has been done to make way for the new Swift, which will be launched in late August or early September. Suzuki first unveiled the Swift in 2005 with a sporty sub-compact design.
Dealers have started accepting bookings for the new Swift. Maruti Suzuki has codenamed the new Swift as YP8 and its trial runs are on in the Manesar plant. Maruti currently sells close to 5000 Swifts every month and the car when launched in 2005 had changed the whole face of the India’s hatchback B to B+ segment. Other carmakers were forced to launch cars in the premium hatchback segment.
Suzuki, Maruti’s parent company had unveiled the 3rd generation Suzuki Swift last year in Hungary. In Europe a buyer has the option of 1.3 litre diesel engine and a 1.2 litre petrol engine. It is not known whether Maruti will launch this version of the Swift.
The 3rd generation Swift is slightly larger than the present one. Extensive higher strength steel has been used to make bodyshell lighter and stiffer. Suzuki had said that the new 3rd generation Swift has an improved design, safety, fuel consumption and CO2 emission.
The Swift, which is available in petrol, diesel and CNG versions is currently priced between Rs 3.9-5.5 lakh in India. Swift competes with Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia, Nissan Micra, Fiat Punto and Toyota Liva .
French carmaker Renault last month said it will launch a new hatchback in India during the Auto Expo in January 2012 that will compete with Swift. The car is specifically designed for the Indian market by its design centre in Mumbai.

Dynamic European styling. Six on-board computers. Latest diesel technology. Cute and cheeky looks. Excellent driving manners. Stiffened suspension for Indian roads. Petrol engine demands more refinement.

Suzuki's position as the world leader in manufacturing compact cars is well known. With this popularity, the company put together great brains from India ? 21 engineers and designers to create a unique model. With cutting edge technological features, 'Swift' was created with Japanese technology and European styling -- the result was an innovative, sporty and elegant design.

Keeping in mind the Indian roads, the suspension was modified and good ground clearance was provided. The new chassis was developed and put to rigorous track tests. Finally, an all-new car came into the market. A 2005 debutante, the Maruti Suzuki Swift has won many awards including 'the car of the year,' from various motoring associations like Overdrive, CNBC Autocar and BBC-Top Gear, for its comfort, safety features and concept car like styling. A roaring success from the get-go, the Swift is available in five versions in both BS III and BS IV complaints: LXi, VXi, ZXi (petrol), and LDi and VDi (diesel). Now it has included VI BS IV the Swift One Million Edition as a new petrol variant. These models are differentiated by their levels of safety and comfort.

Competitive pricing, a sporty engine and unique design have made it a very tempting option in the compact/hatchback segment. Swift has a good number of competitors namely TATA Indica, Hyundai Getz, and Chevy SRV and U-VA.

Peppy in traffic and smooth on the highway, the Swift with its 5-speed manual transmission offers a comfortable ride. Powering the Swift is the 1.3L engine that generates 87 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm, contributing to a smooth ride. It is really 'swift' in performance; it sprints from 0-100 kmph in just 10 seconds and clocks a maximum speed of 160 kmph. Swift returns 11 kmpl in city conditions and 13 km on highway.

The all-new diesel comes with the latest CRDi fuel injection system. The turbo-charged 1.3L makes 75 bhp at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm. The low revving engine needs fewer downshifts in city conditions as there is ample power at low rpm. There are six computers on board for engine management system, electronic power steering, automatic climate control, anti-lock braking system, central locking and airbag deployment.

The Swift is a sporty car; with its short wheelbase, wide, lower-profile tyres (on the ZXi) and stiff springs, it feels tauter. It is easy for cornering because of its considerable grip. The stiff suspension gives it good body control. Suspension for the Indian Swift has been developed especially to tackle speed breakers, and has a raised look.

New Maruti Suzuki Swift Car - Interior

The concept car like styling of the Swift makes it standout spectacularly in traffic, while its compact dimensions allow it to squeeze into crowded parking lots. The interiors are well-appointed, simple to use, classy and surprisingly roomy for a compact car.

Swift comes in striking colours such as Solid Bright Red, Metallic Garnet Orange, Pearl Metallic Arctic White, Metallic Ozone Blue, Metallic Silky Silver, Metallic Iridium Gold, Metallic Azure Grey and Metallic Midnight Black.

As for the comfort, the Swift is fitted with front and rear electric windows. Central door locking facility is available only for the VXi and ZXi variants. All the three trims come equipped with 3-spoke urethane steering wheel. For all those who need reminders, the Maruti Swift provides light off/key reminder. There is a driver's seatbelt warning lamp and door ajar warning lamp too.

The high-end Swift comes fully loaded with added safety features and accessories including automatic climate control, driver seat height adjuster, 12V accessory socket in the luggage area, electromagnetic type tailgate opener, rear window wiper and de-mister, dual front airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), keyless entry and seatbelt pre-tensioners (In the event of a crash, a pre-tensioner will tighten the belt at once, thereby preventing the occupant from a sudden jerk). Standard features on the base model include power steering, air-conditioning, brake assist, seat-belts for all seating positions, child lock on rear doors and side impact beams.

New Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire Car - Exterior 15.4/19.5 kmpl(city/highway)(Petrol)
18.9/23.8 kmpl(city/highway)(Diesel)
1.3L Inline-4, 83.8 bhp, petrol
1.3L Turbocharged Inline-4, 73.9 bhp, diesel

Striking Chrome Grille. Climate Control. Generous Trunk. Handling. Interior materials. Price.

Maruti Suzuki has been reborn as a make with a portfolio of global models. Way back in 1994 when Maruti had introduced its first entry level sedan 'Esteem', it set a benchmark that continued to rule till late 2000. With the aging of Esteem, Maruti scrapped the model from 2008 and has now introduced the new Swift DZiRE sedan. Swift DZiRE is the sedan version of the famous Swift hatchback and resembles its sibling in most aspects.

While designing the new sedan, Maruti has made an effort to retain the original overall design theme of the Swift hatchback. But the rear of the car is a complete deviation from the Swift and resembles the recently launched Maruti SX4 Sedan.

The Swift DZiRE which comes in both BS III and BS IV compliant has six variants - LXi, VXi, and ZXi (Petrol) and LDi, VDi, and ZDi (Diesel). The trims are packed with upscale accessories, quality interior materials and safety features that are a first for the segment. The new car certainly looks to be a good replacement for the Esteem. By incorporating the design of the Swift hatchback, Maruti has saved heavily on design cost and has managed the project on a low budget.

The DZiRE provides a choice of the same two engines available on the hatchback version of Swift. The petrol engine is a 1298cc 16-valve In-line 4 that delivers 83.8 bhp@6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 113 Nm@4500 rpm. The diesel variants get a 1248cc turbocharged DDiS engine that generates 73.9 bhp@4000 rpm and a maximum torque of 190 Nm@2000 rpm.

The Swift DZiRE variants have lower kerb weight in their class with petrol variants ranging from 1010-1035 kg and Diesel variants ranging from 1090-1115 kg. The lower kerb weight advantage translates to good performance of the car. The gearbox is slick and the clutch is smooth. This makes driving the car a pleasure.

Overall, the DZiRE gives the driver good feel and performance that is similar to the Swift hatchback.

New Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire Car - Interior

The Swift DZiRE retains the cheeky appeal of its hatchback sibling with a more premium look. Though the front fascia looks almost the same as the hatchback, it has got a flashy chrome grille and slightly sharper design headlamps.

From the side, the sedan has a complete redesign compared to the hatch, especially from the second pillar. It has bigger doors and larger window glass areas that make occupants feel roomier.

The DZiRE's back is entirely different from the hatchback. The trunk lid is raised and has a lip that merges with the shoulder line of the car. A thick chrome garnish on top of the rear number plate attempts to offset the heaviness of the oversized trunk lid. The rear also flaunts new clear-lens combination lamps.

The car's interior has a luxurious look and feel with the use of good materials. The steering wheel is the same unit that is offered with the Swift and SX4. The instrument cluster has round dials with chrome surround and features a white backlight.

Compared to the hatchback, the most notable changes in the sedan are in the top-end variants that now come with standard steering mounted controls for the music system and the new music system has been well integrated into the dashboard to add a lot of charm. The DZiRE also has a comfortable seating position for the rear occupants compared to the Swift hatchback. The rear seat backrests are angled at 27 degrees.

The VXi, ZXi, VDi, and ZDi come with quality fittings like integrated audio system, tachometer, and convenience features such as audible headlights-on reminder, centre and front cabin lights, vanity mirror, rear seat center armrest, and front electric power windows. The top-end ZXi and ZDi variants are equipped with more upscale features like front airbags, ABS with EBD brake assist, rear window defogger, adjustable tilt steering, and automatic climate control.
