07 December, 2011 Mahindra Navistar Automotives, a joint venture between Mahindra & Mahindra and the US-based Navisar International Corporation, on Tuesday said it plans to invest Rs 250 crore at the Chakan unit to ramp up the commercial vehicle manufacturing and distribution network.
“We have already invested Rs 710 crore at the Chakan unit, out of the total project cost of Rs 1,000 crore. We will be investing around Rs 250 crore in the next couple of years to increase production capacity of HCVs and expand our distribution network,&lrquo; Mahindra Navistar director Pawan Goenka told reporters in Mumbai. The company has Rs 750 crore of equity and 50-50 invested by both the partners along with debt.
“We are not making any profits, as our volumes are very small as present. But as we ramp up our production capacity, in the next 12 months, we expect cash break-even,&lrquo; Goenka said.
After announcing start of production and subsequently start of sales last year, the company on Tuesday announced its national launch. After launching MN25 in heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs) category, the company is now offering the MN31, MN40 and MN25 tippers.
“After seeding sales in select markets and building a formidable service network of nearly 940 service points on strategic trucking routes, it is all set to take on the length and breadth of the country through its commercial launch. Today, we are a full range commercial vehicle player with a pan-India service network dedicated towards our customers,&lrquo; Goenka said.
“During one year period, we have gained adequate market experience and customer feedback to significantly enhance the performance, fuel efficiency and value of our products. We can proclaim that all our products are truly made in India.&lrquo;
“We propose to launch products like the MN35, MN49, MN25 Heavy duty Tipper (for mining) and certain other model variants during the next financial year,&lrquo; MNAL’s managing director, Nalin Mehta said, adding that company is also looking at entering into bus manufacturing segment.
During last one year, the company has expanded its dealerships to 48 and hopes to add another 50 to get ready in the next 12-18 months taking the grand total to 100, he said.
The current monthly sales volumes of the company are headed towards 1300-1400 units (300-400 HCVs and 900-1000 LCVs a month). Of its new HCV range, over 2500 trucks are already plying across Indian roads, catering to various customer needs or business solutions, Goenka said.
Commenting on the future plan, Goenka said, the Rs 60,000 crore, commercial vehicle segment in the country is likely to grow by 9 percent in the second half of FY12 as compared to 8 percent growth witnessed during the first half of FY 12.

25 November, 2011 The Mahindra Group on Thursday said it is open to more acquisitions in South Korea as it is keen to deepen its engagement with that market where it has presence in the automobile space.
“Yes, there is an opportunity to further explore investments.., more acquisition opportunities in Korea, particularly in implements, farm equipments, and technology, yes we will definitely look at,” vice-chairman and managing director Anand Mahindra told reporters here when asked whether his group is looking at more assets in Korea.
“Currently, we are sourcing tractors from Tongyang of Korea and Mitsubishi of Japan and selling them in the US markets under the M&M band. I would like to deepen this relationship, by increasing the volume intake,” he added.
Mahindra, who has just been appointed by the Korean government as its honorary ambassador, was talking to reporters on the sidelines of a meet on Indo-Korea bilateral cooperation.
“As far as the companies from which we already import are concerned, we are deepening our relationship, hopefully using our brand and deepening their market share in the US,” he said.
The Mahindras had completed in March the acquisition of the sick SsangYong Motor Co for about Rs 2,105 crore, making its first foray into Far Eastern country.
For M&M, which had lost the bid to buy JLR in 2008 to the Tatas, the SsangYong buyout was a big step towards realising its ambition to be a global player in the utility and sports utility vehicles segment.
When asked whether M&M would be showcasing the SUVs from SsangYong at the forthcoming Auto Expo in the Capital, Mahindra answered in the affirmative.

20 October, 2011 Utility vehicle major Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is developing a mini SUV for India with Ssangyong, the South Korean SUV maker it acquired last year. Codenamed the S101, the ‘Nano’ SUV, as it is being dubbed by some workers on M&M’s shop floors will be powered by 1-1.2 litre petrol engines and 1.5-litre diesel engines. Work on the project began a year ago, say people working on it; and the vehicles are expected to roll out of M&M’s plant in Chakan on the outskirts of Pune, where the newly launched XUV500 is being produced in 26-28 months. The estimated price range of the mini SUV is between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 4 lakh.
The price tag is noteworthy because most mini-SUVs - typically under 4 metres in length - are premium products. The Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Juke and Skoda Yeti are some of the best-selling mini and compact SUVs globally, yet their pricing is clearly premium - the Yeti, for instance, sells in India at over Rs 14 lakh.
If M&M can pull off the S101 at the stated price, it would make it the only mini-SUV in that price range anywhere in the world. To persist with the Nano analogy, it would do for SUVs what Tata Motors has done for cars by opening up an altogether new ultra low cost category.
The S101 project is also the first joint development effort by the M&M-Ssangyong combine. For the South Korean maker of sports utility vehicles, the low-cost segment is alien, and hence a welcome addition to its range.
There’s another reason both M&M and Ssangyong are keen on this segment: In India, passenger vehicles under 4 metres fitted with 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines attract a lower excise duty of 10 percent (for larger cars it is 22 percent). In South Korea, the vehicle will have a turbo-charged sub-1 litre engine as this segment does not attract a levy except for a 10 percent value-added tax.
When contacted, an M&M spokesperson said that as a matter of policy the company does not comment on future plans. "Work on a new platform should be concluded very soon and it will be on the compact side", said Rajan Wadhera, chief executive, technology, product development & sourcing, M&M. He refused to divulge specific details. He added that the project is at the styling and customer research stage and technocommercial viability has to be established. People close to the development say the platform will be monocoque (or unibody) and the plan is to have different body shells for M&M and Ssangyong vehicles.
M&M has set up a team of over 100 engineers who are working on various functions of styling, body design, trims, vehicle integration, suspensions, engine development and cooling systems. The company is relying on value engineering and software solutions to keep development costs low.

29 September, 2011 Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), India’s leading manufacturer of utility vehicles today launched its new global sport utility vehicle XUV 500 at a starting price of Rs 10.80 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi). The company will begin bookings from Saturday. This is the first major utility vehicle launch from Mahindra after its Xylo launch.
Mahindra will position the XUV 500 between the Scorpio and the premium SUV range which comprises of the Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Captiva, Mitubishi Outlander, Honda CR-V and the likes. The XUV 500 will be available in both 4x2 and 4x4 variants.
In the domestic market, it will be first available in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Pune. It will be pitched against the likes of General Motors' Captiva and the Toyota Fortuner, which are priced at around Rs 19-20 lakh.
Stating that the new vehicle is a reflection of the firm's ever-growing global aspirations, M&M Vice-Chairman Anand Mahindra said: “XUV500 is much more than a car. It will be another cult vehicle, as Scorpio was.”
Goenka said the XUV500, on which M&M spent Rs 650 crore to develop, is the first product from its Chennai research and development centre. It will be produced at the Chakan plant.
The auto giant will manufacture the new SUV at its Chakan plant near Pune. Designed entirely at Mahindra’s R&D centre in Chennai, the XUV promises a lot of firsts for Mahindra. The XUV 500 is the country’s first indigenously developed monocoque SUV and also the first to offer a transverse engine layout. Since the XUV 500 is a global vehicle, it was conceived and designed with global standards of quality, technology, testing norms, regulations and emissions right from the very beginning.
The XUV500 is powered by a 2.2-litre M-Hawk engine which is now in an east-west layout as against a north-south placement in other Mahindra vehicles. This engine develops 140bhp but more importantly has 330Nm of torque. Mated to this engine is another first for an all Indian vehicle - a six-speed manual gearbox, developed in-house by Mahindra itself as is the front wheel drive transfer case. Base models will be front wheel drive while another version will have an all wheel drive layout with a torque on demand mechanism also delivering drive to the rear wheels.
The grille of the XUV 500 is different while the front end treatment with projector headlamps, LED day-time running lights, large front bumper with streaked air dam and recessed fog lamps make for a menacing look. Latest safety features also has been added in the vehicle in abundance. The prices of the Mahindra XUV 500 are as follows Rs 10.80 lakhs for W8 four wheel drive, Rs 11.95 lakhs for W8 two wheel drive variant and Rs 12.88 lakhs for W8 four wheel drive variant (All ex-showroom Delhi).

6-Speed Automatic Transmission (AT) * Estimated values may differ under various conditions.

India's first BS IV Car. Revolutionary Micro-Hybrid Technology. Powerful mHawk Diesel Engine. Effortless Acceleration. Fire Retardant Upholstery. Excellent Driving Experience. Automatic Transmission only on Top-End Variant.

The Scorpio is a gentle yet powerful SUV from Mahindra & Mahindra. The new Scorpio reflects the muscular DNA of Mahindra with its aggressive stances, muscular adornments, strongly toned form, and revolutionary engine technology.

The first Mahindra Scorpio introduced in 2002 had set new benchmarks in the industry with its innovative styling, structure, and automotive technology. Since then, the SUV has undergone various modifications and changes to continue its story of domination.

The new Scorpio rightly tagged as 'Mighty Muscular' continues to retain Scorpio's worth and credibility in the market. It is introduced with a more powerful mHawk engine and revolutionary micro-hybrid technology. It also confirms to strict emission norms and makes the new Scorpio India's first BS IV car.

The Scorpio is available in following variants: LX, SLE, VLX BS3, VLX BS3 HE AIRBAG, VLX BS4, VLX Automatic and VLX BS3 HE AIRBAG Special edition. The heart of all the variants is a refined 2.2-litre 4-cylinder mHawk diesel engine that is mated to revolutionary micro-hybrid technology. The engine generates a whopping 120 bhp of power and propels the car from 0 to 60 km/h in just 5.7 seconds.

The advanced mHawk engine is one of the most recent innovations in the Indian car industry and in the new Scorpio it is optimized for higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions. It is supported with Bosch common rail diesel technology with solenoid injectors to give an incredible boost to mileage and also help conserve the environment. Moreover, the mHawk's new 2-stage chain drive system and hydraulic lash adjuster drastically reduce the level of engine noise resulting in smoother and quieter operation.

In addition, the micro-hybrid technology enables the engine to intelligently switch off when the car is idle, eventually lowering fuel-consumption and reducing pollution. The system automatically starts the engine again when the clutch pedal is pressed. It also makes the car compliant to BS IV emission norms.

The SUV is linked to a 2-wheel drive with independent front with coil springs and anti-roll bar or a 4-wheel drive torsion bar front suspension. A multilink rear suspension with coil springs provides good ride stability and comfort.

A 5-speed manual transmission comes standard on the 2009 Scorpio and a 6-speed automatic transmission is present on the top-end VLX Automatic variant. The automatic transmission is fitted with user engaged and auto engaged modes for an excellent driving experience.

'N' is the normal mode for ordinary driving conditions and 'W' is the winter mode that can be switched over to on icy and slippery roads to improve the car's stability. It also has an additional 'M' mode that is the manual/engine brake mode that utilizes braking force of the engine for enhanced control on steep descents.

In the auto engaged mode there are 'Uphill and Downhill Mode' and 'Fast-Off Mode'. Uphill and Downhill Mode is the basic control unit of the transmission system that implements relevant gear shifts whereas the Fast-Off Mode helps to avoid any kind of rapid gear changes in case the driver releases the pedal quickly.

New Mahindra Scorpio Car - Interior

The Scorpio is aggressively structured with a well-toned body structure complemented by an imposing new front grille with a glint of chrome in the middle, gladiator-like wraparound bumpers, sporty decals, illuminated spoiler, and electrically-powered outside rear view mirrors.
