23 November, 2011 More than 60 vehicles will be launched, including several global debuts, at the Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi early next year despite the recent slump in the Indian car market, industry officials said.
German carmaker BMW’s small luxury car Mini, which will make its India debut at the show, and Bugatti, maker of the world’s fastest car, are expected to be among the show-stoppers at the 6-day event starting on January 7.
The highlights of the show-the world’s most popular auto fair attracting more than 2 million visitors, up from 1.2 million in 2010-will be a new breed of sports utility vehicles and super bikes that will hit the Indian roads soon, officials said. Leading the pack will be Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker, which has finally woken up to the potential of SUVs in the country. It will showcase a new ’made for India’ five-seater concept SUV on the first day of the fair, signaling its intention to look beyond the ageing Gypsy and Grand Vitara models.
“It’s the best bet from Maruti Suzuki so far to tap the potential of younger customers,” a top company official said. “Essentially an SUV, it will have the affordability of Maruti and durability of Suzuki,” added the person, requesting anonymity.
A line-up of 1,000 different vehicles spread over 1.25 lakh sq metres will be on display, including at least a dozen new cars made specifically for Indian customers. Tata Motor, which stole the show in 2008 with its Nano, is looking at a repeat with three new global launches to be done by its chairman Ratan Tata.
Tata Motors has also lined up all new sedans, SUVs and concept vehicles from its Jaguar and Land Rover brand. In fact, Jaguar Land Rover has decided to skip the Detroit Auto Show, which overlaps with Delhi expo for three days. After posting some stunning sales in China with it new range, JLR is betting high to unshackle the dominance of German players in luxury car segment. It is expected to bring its new sedan range and the DC100 concept from Land Rover.
There will be at least six launches in the luxury car segment including the Audi S6 and its smallest SUV Q3, BMW’s new M5 Series and the Mercedes Benz GLK compact SUV. South Korean major Hyundai Motor is looking at getting its new small car and a compact SUV concept besides launching its new Sonata limousine.
The number of hangars has almost been halved to 10, said Sugato Sen, senior director of SIAM, which organises the event along with the CII and Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India.

29 September, 2011 Buying a diesel-run car will pinch you more from today with Delhi Government increasing the registration fee for such vehicles by 25 per cent on the existing amount.
Officials said the registration fee for low priced diesel vehicle will increase by at least Rs 6,000 while the hike could be in the range of Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 for high-end luxury cars as well as goods carriers.
On an average 1,200 to 1,400 vehicles are registered in the city daily, out of which around 30 per cent are diesel cars.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit while presenting the annual budget in March had proposed to levy additional tax on all diesel-propelled vehicles specified in the schedule-I of the Motor Vehicle Taxation Act 2004.
Officials said Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna has signed the file effecting the hike. They said diesel vehicles attracting four per cent of the total cost as registration fee will now have to pay five per cent while vehicles having to pay seven per cent tax will have to pay 8.75 per cent as registration fee.
The high end luxury cars will attract registration fee of 12.5 per cent instead of existing 10 per cent.
The Chief Minister had proposed the hike in registration fee of diesel vehicles with an aim to discourage people to buy such vehicles due to environmental concerns.

28 April, 2011 Auto Expo 2012 may have a second venue within the capital region because the entire space at Pragati Maidan has been sold and there is a long queue of prospective participants outside.
“We are contemplating a second location to accommodate the entire auto industry in an integrated manner,” said Vishnu Mathur who heads the country’s auto industry body. The Indian Auto Expo has become a priority destination for most automakers over the years when the country emerged the second fastest-growing car market and a global leader in truck and bus sales. But space is scarce.
The entire exhibition space at Pragati Maidan, which hosted all the 10 previous motor shows here, was sold in less than a week. And many multinationals are yet to ensure their participation in the world’s largest motor show in attracting visitors. The venue has 55,000 square metre space, which is just about half of total demand, according to Mathur, director general of the Society of Indian Automobile Industry.
The society jointly organises the show with industry body CII and auto component body ACMA. A person close to the organisers said Expo Mart at Noida could be the second venue that will accommodate component makers and ancillaries units. Space crunch had forced some big companies including Ford India to miss the previous auto show in 2010. There were several disruptions including cancellation of promotional events.
The problem will be worse next year if Pragati Maidan remains the only venue, because there are more participants and there may be more visitors than last year’s two million. There will also be 35 vehicle launches, 10 more than last time.
