30 September, 2011 South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motors is making the global debut of its smallest car, Eon, in India next month, and has already started the trial production at its Chennai facility.
The new car will take on Maruti Alto, India’s largest selling car, and will be made exclusively in India. Pegged at the starting price of 2.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the car carrying an 800 cc engine and options of both manual and automatic transmission will be a major volume driver for its wholly owned Indian subsidiary Hyundai Motor India after sales of its smaller aging cars - Santro and i10 - has started tapering off in the Indian market.
“New car launches are determined on the basis of the long-term outlook on a market. Our outlook on the Indian market in the medium and long-term is very positive. We want to address the Indian customer with regular product launches,” Hyundai director (marketing & sales) Arvind Saxena said.
According to auto industry insiders, Hyundai Motor global chairman Mong-Koo Chung will fly down to Delhi especially for the launch in the middle of October. Eon is Hyundai’s most ambitious project till date catering to the segment, which is the largest in the Indian market and carries tremendous potential for volume growth and will be made exclusively in India only for all global markets.
The new car will be pitted directly against Alto that sold over three-lakh units in 2010 to became world’s largest sold single car brand.
“Eon is the best bet for Hyundai to increase sales after relatively sound success of its smaller cars like Santro,” said a Mumbai-based auto analyst.

“We regularly review the situation, see the situation and we will take a decision on a price hike at our meeting next month,” Karl Slym, president and managing director, General Motors India, said in response to queries about an imminent price hike.
He added, “Commodity prices are crazy but as the market slows down, these could stabilise although this has not happened. Crude and steel prices are still high and prices of precious materials, used in catalytic converters, are very volatile.”
On a more positive note, he was confident that the OEM will beat industry growth for a second consecutive year. “Last year, when industry grew at 30 percent, we grew at 60 percent. This year, too, we will be double the rate of growth of the automobile industry. During July and August, the passenger car market has shrunk but we grew at 14 percent in July and 10 percent in August because last year we did not have a diesel in the mini segment,” he said, adding that under the circumstances, they are unlikely to offer discounts during the festive season.
Mr Slym, who was in Pune to inaugurate the city’s fifth dealership and the 252nd across the country, said they will add more dealerships across the country.
Referring to the five new products that GMI will launch in the next 15 months, he said two of the five will be made at Talegaon, its passenger car plant, and three at Halol in Gujarat, its commercial vehicle plant. Of the five, two will be of SAIC design and the remainder three from GM. The Talegaon plant capacity will increase to 1.72 lakh capacity from 1.4 lakh currently by December, to handle the new products. “These vehicles will have local content of 80-90 percent from the start,” he added.

The pace of vehicle sales in India soars down in the month of November. This has happened at a stretch of 4 months of record. The growth based on yearly basis registered 17.81% as against 45.93 % of growth registered in the previous month of October.

According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (the apex Industry body representing 44 leading vehicle and vehicular engine manufacturers in India) the total number of vehicles sold in the country stood at 12, 21,981 units in November this year as against 10, 37,232 units in the same month last year.

SIAM Senior Director Sugato Sen told reporters"The automobiles sales growth in November was slower than September and October, and the actual volume was also lower". He further adds “The main reason for this was that the build up to the festive season that gave additional volumes has tapered off,".

As stated by Sen, the industry body expects even lower sales in December as compared to November. On the other hand the sales of domestic passenger car jumped by 20.
