tvs scooty pep plus 4 950x712 Tata Nanos Low Cost Inspires TVS Motors

TVS Motor Company’s Chairman & Managing director Venu Srinivasan has voiced out that TVS Motor is hoping to emulate Tata’s low-cost manufacturing processes for the Rs 1-lakh Nano small car at TVS Motor to build cheaper bikes mainly for the small towns and rural markets.

The introduction of the Tata Nano, the cheapest car in the world, made us take notice (of how to build low-cost products)… it is possible to manufacture low-cost products in the country,” Srinivasan had said recently. His low-cost plans along with the company’s decision to manufacture affordable new models and expanding capacity is a perfect blend for this financial year.

For the moment the 100cc TVS Star Sport at Rs 32,000 (ex-showroom, New Delhi) is the cheapest bike offered from TVS Motors.

This is not the first time the company has looked to provide low-priced models for commuters, especially those in rural areas. In 1980, the company launched TVS-50, India’s first two-seater 50 cc moped. From then on, the company’s portfolio of products has grown manifold.

Developing a low cost bike is not new chapter for TVS as previously they were successful in this episode. In 1980 TVS Motors was India’s first two develop and sell a two seater 50cc moped. From then on the company has expanded their porfolio. The following years saw some of the following – 100 cc Indo-Japanese motorcycles, TVS Scooty, the first indigenous scooterette (a sub-100 cc variomatic), catalytic converter-enabled motorcycle, the 110 cc Shogun, India’s first five-speed motorcycle, the Shaolin, India’s first 150cc, 4-stroke motorcycle, The Fiero.

Venu Srinivasan for the moment has been inspired by Tata Nano’s low cost. Only time would tell how Venu Srinivasan & TVS Motors will adapt the low cost strategy in their future developements.

“We will develop products that are specific to rural areas and are affordable,” Srinivasan told his shareholders at the company’s recent annual general meeting – Stay Tuned.
