German luxury car maker rolled out the GL-Class in 2006 in the North American International Auto Show. The GL-Class is a full-size crossover SUV which can be called as the seven-passenger counterpart of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class. The German luxury car giant has drove in the GL-Class in India a day ahead of the 2010 Delhi Auto Expo.
The GL-Class lacks the typical SUV boxy styling and body-on-frame construction of the G-Class in favour of a modified version of the M-Class's unibody architecture. It is a three-row, seven-passenger SUV with much more luxurious equipment than previous civilian G-Class vehicles. The GL class was originally intended to replace the 25-year old G-Class model, however due to public objections, Mercedes-Benz had decided to keep the G-Class in production for the foreseeable future and decided to update it for 2006.
The GL-Class is available in the Indian market in a single diesel version, the GL 350 CDI. In India, it will rival up against the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Volvo XC90, Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Range Rover Sport and the Land Rover Range Rover. It comes in six awesome colours, Calcite White, Obsidian Black, Carneol Red, Iridium Silver, Palladium Silver and Sanidine Beige.
The GL 350 CDI can boast of a 3.0 L V6 4MATIC engine which can derive a power of 224 bhp and a maximum torque of 510 Nm. The GL 350 CDI features the innovative BlueEfficiency Technology of Mercedes-Benz. Hence the engine is low on emissions and fuel consumption as well as powerful and extremely quite. In fact, it can be said that it carries one of the cleanest diesel engines. The BlueEfficiency Technology is a custom-designed efficiency package which can cut fuel consumption by up to 12 per cent.
The CDI engine is coupled to a 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission gearbox. The seven forward gears in the 7G-Tronic allow an ideally adapted engine speed all the time, thus cutting fuel consumption, while the shorter shift times and smoother shifts make gear changes easier as well as reducing the noise level. Driving enjoyment is also enhanced and manual shifting of gears is also possible.
The GL-Class can sprint from 0-100km/h in 9.5 seconds and can clock 210 km in a hour. The excellent off-road capabilities of this crossover SUV comes from its All-Wheel Drive system.
The GL-Class is a fusion of elegance, style and off-road capability. The Airmatic air suspension and the Adaptive Damping System (ADS) offer a high level of comfort and impressive agility. It can adjust itself to suit the prevailing road conditions.
High-quality materials and high-sheen chrome trim adorn the GL-Class and takes luxury to a new dimension. The chrome trims lends the front fascia a striking appearance with brilliant silver-colour louvres in the radiator grille. The bi-xenon headlights accentuate the front of the car. The LED tail lamps add a particularly distinguishing feature to the rear section. The tail end is enhanced with a simulated underguard in stainless steel with a chrome look. The aluminium-look running board gives a smart look to the SUV. The GL-Class stands tall on 19-inch alloy rims.
The GL-Class is generous in the truest sense. It has room for everything. It can accommodate the whole family for a long drive and still has plenty of room left for the luggage. On opening the door, the driver is greeted by a pleasant light that makes the interior look bigger and cozier. The GL-Class can seat up to seven people with its three rows of seats that come with improved lateral support and the crash-active Neck-Pro. The front seats meet all the ergonomic needs and the rear seats offer high level of comforts and can be adjusted in four ways. Te third row of seats can be folded away electrically for extra room. All the seat covers are made with the finest leather upholstery with topstitching in contrasting colours. The instrument panel and door centre panels are covered in leather. The tube-style surround in the instrument cluster feature chrome rings and white needles with 3D scale graduation. The Audio 20 sound system plays music through eight loudspeakers and is equipped with a CD drive. The wood/leather steering multifunctional wheel enhances the driving experience. The panoramic sliding sunroof lets in the gust of fresh air and ample of sunlight. The three-zone climate controls keep the interior cosy and interior air filter freshen up the air inside the cabin.

The Intelligent Light System with adaptive bi-xenon headlights adjust to the driving situation and weather conditions. The Neck-Pro® head restraints help to reduce the risk of whiplash injury. The Parktronic parking system and the reversing aid the driver when parking and manouevring in tight spaces.
